HypoThyroid...Ugh!

Riley Coyote on Health - Fri, November 23 2007

I went to the vets the other day for my annual checkup! It was horrible. The vet would not let mom or dad hold me while she did her thing. I screamed the whole time they were working on me. My momma was so MAD! I know it's a new vet, but she wouldn't listen when momma or dad said that it would be best if one of them held me! She had her "Tech" do her choke hold on me. I felt Threatened and Violated!

The good news is that I'm bug & worm free! But I do have bad news...my THYROID level is low! Now mom knows why I'm so lazy! And I gotta loose some weight! So no more "mom snacks" or cottage cheese for me! Bummer....I got some little blue pills that I have to take every day and some time the first of next year I gotta go in and get some more blood taken from my arm....Which means if mom don't get the message thru to the vet then dad will take me in and the Vet Tech will put me in another chokehold.
Aren't vets suppose to Help Us! My momma was scared to death that I was going to die of a Heart Attack because of the stress I went thru! Just cause the vet wouldn't listen to her!

poor riley!!! will you have to take the pills forever, or just until your thyroid is under control? hopefully not forever! you might have your mom give you rescue remedy before you go back the next time, it might help calm your anxieties. some vets are fine with the owners holding their pets, and some are not. i know that sometimes the owners aren't as good at holding them as the vet staff, and sometimes the vet gets bit because of it, so maybe that was why the vet had the staff hold you? sometimes it's better on you if your parents go out of the room, because you can pick up on their being upset, and get more upset yourself. anyhow, hope you feel better! oh, and one good diet that works.....GREEN BEANS!!! (salt free! ;o)

Dude! That's awful! I hope you & your momma got treats for getting through such a terrible visit. Hey guess what? My mommy has hypothyroidism too!! It's made her gain weight and feel lazy, just like you. I hope you get on the right level of meds and start feeling like your old self soon!

Thanks Joe, the vet said I'd have to take them forever! Mom here...I'm going to try to talk one on one with the vet and explain to her that I can handle my dogs I don't need a Tech doin a Chokehold on my dog.
I love my "Kids" to death and baby them all the time, but when it comes to DOCTOR TIME...they know that they are not going to be "babied". I guess I'm just used to our Vets back home...he and she both understood us and our dogs. The only thing the Techs did there were hand him/her equipment they needed. Me or Dave had a hold of Riley and the only time he ever got upset was when the thermometer went into the butt! Well, all he did was whine and his eyes bugged out! Wish me luck with the conversation with the vet.

Charlie! Mom was posting while you were..Thanks Bud! I'll keep ya all posted! Mom has to watch herself tho! She has a temper when it comes to me and her other kids!
The neat thing is that I get tiny slivers of hot dogs with my little blue pills!

i completely understand, because i always hold my own pets for stuff, too. there have been a couple times they held them (cats, tho) and had to take them back to another room, like to draw blood from the neck, but we have gone to this clinic since 1975, and i completely trust them. hope your talk goes well, hopefully they will understand your concerns!

I take a little blue pill every morning too. Serena takes the pink one (not as strong). I snarf it right up, and Mama says she hasn't noticed any changes through the years except that I do get off the sofa for at least an hour everyday now... a big improvement!
Don't worry, it's not a big thing.

When I go to VCA the vets and the techs are always so nice to me! They always ask mommy to hold me still because I get so excited to see so many new people! They also give me lots of treats while I'm there and they like to talk to me.

I'm sorry your vet wasn't so nice. At least she was knowledgable and caught the problem.

I'm hyperthyroid. Opposite condition... and I get meds twice a day for the rest of my life, unless my mom wins a large sum of money and I get surgery -- she has a hard time justifying a few grand for something that isn't 100% guaranteed when meds are working quite well for me.

Hey Riley, I know what you mean about your momma having a temper when it comes to you & your fursiblings-- my mommy has a mouth on her too! You should have seen her the other day when we were at the barkpark & some dog totally jumped on me--she started trash-talkin' big time! Told the guy he was rude 'cuz he didn't leave the park with his aggressive outofcontrol! dog. Good luck with the meds for your thyroid stuff man- my mommy's got to take them for the rest of her life too! You're lucky that you get a piece of hot dog with yours- she has to take hers plain!
