Why am I so mean?

Satine on Behavior - Wed, November 21 2007

Hi everyone…Satine’s mom here. For the past three weeks or so we have been having a problem with Satine. She has become very aggressive towards her feline brother, Sambo. She will hiss, spit, howl, growl, and scream at him for no apparent reason. They have lived together peacefully for three years—Satine is 5 and Sambo is 3. Last night when we got home from the gym, she had him cornered in the bedroom. He wanted to come out and see us, but he was scared to go past her. We have not noticed any physical changes in Satine—her eating and litter box habits are the same. She looks healthy and is very affectionate towards me. For whatever reason, she is very upset with Sambo and it’s disturbing to me because I don’t want Sambo to be intimidated in his own home. Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone have any advice? Thanks to all and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Well, sounds like it could be time for a vet trip. Satine's aggression may be her way of showing she's not feeling well... Cats don't have the ability that humans have to just say, "I hurt" or "I'm sick". So us peoples have to take cues from unusual behavior that may be caused by an illness.

Yep, consult your vet. It is unusual that Satine would start having these problems with Sambo suddenly after living in harmony for so long before. Has there been any changes in the home? No addition of other animals/people? Have you recently been gone for an extended period of time? Is there anything new in the home-furniture, carpeting? If not call the vet.

Thanks everyone! Cooter--no, we have not had any changes in our house. I have noticed a cat that has been hanging around outside the house. Maybe she sees that cat and is scared, and then takes it out on Sambo?
