Kitty Grooming?

Otto on Grooming - Tue, November 20 2007

Otto here, I don't blog much, my brothers are the blabber mouths. Anyway, mommy was wondering if there's anyway she can give me a bath, not that I want one. She says I'm 11 years old and never had a bath and could really use one. I said, but I groom myself mommy. You know what she said back? She said, nu uh, you're too fat to reach! Do you believe that! How rude. Used to my dog brother Spudder would groom me, but he crossed over the bridge and know I don't really care for any of my other dog brothers to take care of me even though they try.
Mommy brushes me and she used the spray stuff this one time, but she said it didn't do much good.
So, does anyone have any suggestions.
I don't want to be fat AND dirty.

I hate baths! Mom will occasionally give me a bath. I scream and cry the entire time. I also have my claws and scratch her by mistake. I do not like them. She does make the water warm and holds me by under my front arms with just my back paws in the water. She uses a cup to pour water on my back and tummy. Mom uses johnson's baby bath on me and it doesn't bother me. She tried to use a hair drier on me once. Big mistake! Good luck.

P.S. My coat was silky, smooth and shiny after my bath.

The best money I spend each month is the money I pay a groomer to bathe and groom Hannah and Zoey so I don't have to. She always tells me they're well-behaved and they probably are, but it's worth it to me. Zoey has a medium-length coat and she costs me $32 ($25 bath, plus tip) for a bath, nails trimmed, hygiene cut and paw fur trimmed. You look like a short-hair cat, so you wouldn't need your paw fur trimmed or a hygiene cut. If you decide to bath the cat on your own, here's a few things you'll need:
*tall smaller tub to place inside the bathtub, like one of those tall Rubbermaid storage containers and warm water ready to go (keeps cat in a smaller area, it will feel safer and you will have greater control)
*some kind of shampoo, but don't use conditioner (usually leaves the coat dingy and heavy)
*towels, make sure everything you need is ready before you begin
*it's getting cold outside, so you will probably need to blow-dry and will need a dryer with lower heat settings so you don't burn the skin
*chances are he's not going to like this because he hasn't had one before; I would buy some heavy-duty rubber gloves he can't bite through that you can wear (cat bites are notorious for causing infection because they're deep and their mouths are full of bacteria)

If you're planning on doing this infrequently, I would just have a groomer do it. By the time you buy the supplies, you're probably breaking even in what you would pay a groomer.

Uh, we had a 20+ pound cat called Fiona who had a bad case of racing stripe....and we'd bath her, too. Fill the laundry sink with lots of warm water, have all your supplies right there and a towel laid out next to you. Dip her in, lather/scrub, dip and rinse, wrap in towel, and you're done! We had it down to a 45-second science!

I get bathed regularly--being as big as I am, I don't groom the top of my back very well. Mom also shaves me down into a "lion cut." I love gettting shaved...the clippers feel good...like getting a nice back rub. I tolerate baths--mom usually puts me in the shower because I'll stand on the seat and it also has a pull down head for easy rinsing. Plus, I can't get out because of the glass doors...of course, I wouldn't try anyway...that would use way to much energy.

I might go for a bath if one of you foxy felines gets in with me. Sir Denny Crane
