Spokes, you are correct that Persians are a little more work than your typical house cat. However, a good diet really cuts down on the shedding and brushing. Hannah and Zoey are on a no-grain diet, their coats are beautiful and I probably brush just 2 or 3 times a week. I have to clean Hannah's eyes 4x a day right now and I never have to clean Zoey's, so it really depends on the cat. A lot of Persians are not bred by responsible breeders, so they tend to have more respiratory and eye problems. Most people will tell you that eye gunk in Persians is normal, but it's not. The cat probably has an eye infection or is having a herpes outbreak and unfortunately no one takes the cat to the vet because they think it's normal. Mom's going to go check him out after she takes an exam this afternoon, we'll let you know how he looks.
I was there this afternoon, he's a shy guy who is in need of grooming big time! His eyes were a little goopy too. He wasn't too sure about me at first, but I had him purring and wanting more scritches fairly quickly. As for the former foster, the shedding wasn't something that bothered me, it's the matting of the fur that they're prone to. I've never really been a long-hair cat fan.
