Controlling Kitty Litter

Marvin on Behavior - Mon, November 12 2007

Hello-
Mr. Marvin, being a typical kitty throws his litter all over my basement floor when he is burying. Being a 1911 house, the floor is really porous and one of my projects is to paint it, but not until the spring when I can venilate it. Anyhoos, he tracks it upstairs and when I'm down there also track it upstairs because with the floor in its current state it is really hard to sweep it all up. Has anyone tried any sort of mat that traps the tossed out litter? I feel like my stairs have a continuous grey film that I am constantly cleaning up.

In our upstairs litterbox which is in a bathroom with tile floor, mom uses a carpet square under it. It's bigger than our litterbox and traps the litter really well. It's cheap!

do you have a covered box? we used a covered box in conjunction with a car mat (the rubber kind with the raised groves in them). This helped to seperate our kitty's toes to release the extra litter before she left her area.

Ojo's right, I would get a covered litter box and that will prevent him from throwing it all over the floor. The sifting pans are really nice too and make cleaning the pan a really quick job. We have those rubber kitty mats outside of the litter box and they collect a lot of the litter too. In your situation I would probably put a large piece of plastic on the floor that surrounds the box by several feet, get a covered box and place a carpet or rubber mat right in front of the box that the cat has to step on entering or exiting.

I use a faux grass (plastic) welcome mat. They sell a similar product in pet stores for $20, I went to Menards and got the same thing for about $12 -- kind of like this: http://www.petco.com/Assets/product_images/6/605571006842B.jpg but big enough to go under the box and stick out the sides. It catches a TON of litter. It's not perfect, but the amount of litter tracking is way down.

My cats do the same. And I agree that carpet squares work the best. You can pay a lot and get them at a pet store, or go to a carpet store and ask if they have any remnant sample squares. They may even give them to you for free.
