Cat in tree

River Tipper Carte on Behavior - Mon, November 12 2007

Rivers mom here, got the tree out Sunday for an early party this week.
Well, River won't stay out of it and its not even decorated yet.
I have tried newspapers under mousetraps, that scared him so bad he jumped into the tree and flew out the other side and hit the window. He was back in the tree later in the day. This cat is into everything, I see where "curiousity killed the cat" comes from.
I can't cage him. Anyone have this problem and what can I do, I can't spank him either.
I just know the tree will be on the floor when I get home from work today.

This is the reason I don't have a tree. My former roomate and I had a tree when Charlie was young, he immediately climbed it. Fortunately the house we lived in allowed us to keep the cats separate from where the tree was located. Years later, I tried a tree... Patches unwound all the lights and knocked off decorations. Now I just put lights in the windows. No tree.

We put french doors between the living room and hallway several years ago so the cats can't go in there at times like this. There are several other things we have done, with varying degrees of success. She probably will have her way with it, now that she has seen how much fun it is. She should not be caged, but I often put the cats and a litter box in a room when we have company who are not fond of cats, or if there is something I don't want them to get into. When they are in the room with the tree, and I am in there, I keep a squirt water bottle handy. To deter them from getting in in the first place you can spray Fooey or a similar product directly on the tree. It works for some, not for others. We also have a bell in the tree that rings so we know immediately when one of them has made a move in or on it. And of course, we have all the valuable ornaments on the top couple of tiers of the tree to prevent something precious getting batted off and broken. Good luck.
