Declawing

Cookie on My Blog - Tue, May 29 2007

We cats DO need our claws. Some say we don't, but we DO! We use them to stretch and pull! Can you imagine not being able to stretch certain muscles?? My brother was declawed because my mom and dad didn't know better, but once they read more into it, once I adopted them, they decided it wasn't a kind thing to do and gave me and my sister Pearle a chance to learn where and where not to scratch. We're very smart and learned quickly. Tell you mom and dad to rub cat nip on the scratching posts.... THAT'S where you'll want to scratch!!!!!
This is a personal topic for cat owners and ultimately it's up to them, but read up on it first, then make an educated decision.

My sister Grace has her claws and they've never ever been a problem! She never claws at furniture, or anything...

Mom didn't declaw me, and hasn't ever had a problem with me scratching where I'm not supposed to. You're right, it's a personal decision....but so many people just do it without reading up on what happens when you do. Thanks for your post drawing this to other owners' attention!

Having a cat means claws, so if you want a cat, we need you to teach us what to do and not do with them. Really! We'll learn! My mom said that she has a tip for all of you out there about pedicures....do it while we're snoozing!! I know she does this, but it's much better when I'm relaxed than if I try to fight her. And if I do run away after only a few nails are done, she catches me at the next nap!! There's never a shortage of naps around here.

I'm the only one of the 6 cats in my house with NO claws. Mom had be declawed BEFORE she knew that it was an amputation. She tells me she's sorry all the time. I have scars on my toes. It doesn't seem to bother me though-I do all the same things the other kitties do, or at least I try to. I love my mom and I know she did what she thought was best. Now she knows better and swore she'd never do it to another cat. I still have my back claws though and I'm a lot bigger than the other cats so I'm still able to defend myself if I need to. I know my mommy loves me. She tells me so ALL the time. She's pretty cool too. She takes good care of me.

I'm Cookie's brother, and mom and dad had me declawed, too. I was their first cat EVER and thought that was the thing to do. I don't mind, but mommy keeps telling me that she wishes she could give me my claws back, just like your mom, Simeon. One GOOD thing, is that I don't have to endure those pedicures as often and my brother and sister!!!!!

My previous human declawed all *4* of my paws. The vet left my paws all chopped up looking too.

:(

I can't corner when running around and playing (I slide instead), or even get a good scratch in when I've got an itch.

Amen, Cookie! My mom is 100% against declawing and would never make me live a life without my claws. My scratching post is great and I am very thankful not to have gone through such a painful procedure!
