Oakley vs. Bags

Oakley on Behavior - Sat, November 03 2007

So we've had Oakley now for a few months and he just celebrated his 5 month birthday. He's getting so big (just over 40 lbs!).

But, the biggest problem is that he will not leave his sister (Bags, a kitty) alone! She'll be sitting on the couch, curled up and minding her own business, and he'll come over and yank her right off and try to chew on her! She only weighs 6 lbs, so there's a HUGE weight difference. She's not declawed, but she's just too nice to take a swipe at him so he'll learn his lesson.

Bags has a huge cat tree and the guest bedroom all to herself, but she loves being around people. She is afraid to come into the living room, though, because she'll be attacked!

Any suggestions? I want my pets to get along, or at least co-exist without one chewing on the other.

Thanks!

Well the kitties rule in our house! Mom has to tell them to "be nice" to us. Hee hee. Just keep correcting Oakley to "be gentle" that's what Mom does with me - usually works. Give him a chew toy or his favorite toy to reinforce that Bags isn't a toy and it's not ok to chew on her.

Mom and dad were forever telling me to "be easy" or "leave it" whenever I tried to play with my kitty sister. I eventually got it and now we can be seen taking naps together. Just tell your parents to be patient with you...you will eventually realize Bags is not a chew toy.

I would have Oakley on a leash for awhile. Whenever he starts to approach her grab or step on the leash and say NO KITTY in a stern voice. This may take a while and it takes some effort on your part, but is worth it in the end. If they are in a room together and he is NOT paying attention to the cat, give him lots of petting, treats, etc so he is focused on you instead of her. I also have Maddie go in her crate or go to her mat (a big floor pillow) and put her on a sit or down stay if she is too cat focused. This, too, takes some work and effort, but is important because of their size difference and his predatory behavior. He may not even mean to hurt her, but could do so accidentally. You are doing the right thing by dealing with it now while he is still young, as the longer he gets away with it, the more he will think it is acceptable.
