stuart, still here!

Speedy and (RIP) Stuart on Health - Sun, October 28 2007

just wanted to give the latest update on stuart, since friday. seriously, you guys, this cat has really surprised me. i did not think he'd be here by today (sunday). well, he is. he's not getting any worse, but actually seems to be taking baby steps, and doing slightly better each day. i have given him some nutra-cal several times, that seemed to liven him up. one good thing, is he seems to want to keep grooming himself, which is good, because i can wipe food on his feet, or nose, and he licks it off. he's slept in weird places (for him) each day. friday and most of saturday, it was the couch downstairs. overnight, it was the shelf on the entertainment center. all day today, it was the litter box. (yuck!) i would take him out, place him on the couch, but he kept going back to the litter box and laying down. anyhow, just now, he came bopping into my office, meowed (announcing himself, like he always has) and hopped onto my desk, then hopped into the rubber maid tub on the shelf next to me. (it has a blanket in it for him from the other day)this thrilled me, as you can imagine! also, last night, i opened a can of rabbit canned, and he ran over to eat, like he always has. he ate a good bit. (considering that he's not eaten in the last few days)today, i opened a can of tuna (i'm trying anything) and he ate some of that, licked up the juice, then turned and DRANK WATER!!! right out of his dish!!!he drank a lot, so this told me he was very thirsty, i had not seen him drink since thursday, and i have been watching his every move. i have still been taking him (physically) to the litter box every so often, and he does pee each time, and last night, he had a BM...very small one, but he did, and he also did this afternoon, too. it's so odd, it's like everything is working right, but there seems to be a "short circuit", that is not telling the brain to do the natural things, like eating, drinking, pottying. i am seriously beginning to think he may have had some kind of stroke....i am no vet, but it is just all so strange. he is seeming more alert since friday, too. could he have had a stroke? i don't know, but i do intend to keep doing what we have been doing this weekend, because it does seem to be working....no matter how long it takes, if this IS what it takes, i will do it to get my buddy back. if he cannot, i can accept that, but he does not seem to want to give up. he has a very strong little spirit. anyhow, i will keep you all posted, hopefully it is better news as we go along.

It's good to hear. Mom was wondering how he was doing. At least he's eating and drinking and seems a little better. Baby steps forward are great. Take care Stewie!

Hannah's mom here, you've been in our thoughts and as I was falling asleep tonight I had a thought. Thought #1 cats will not eat food unless they can smell it. Maybe his sense of smell is out of whack? Warming up wet food makes it smell more and of course tuna will stink your whole house up. I fed Hannah tuna for a week once because that's all she would eat. Thought #2 this is my next line of action for Hannah if her eye continues to have issues. It's a website of veterinary holistic medicine. A lot of people have issues just due to contamination of their bodies from different environmental factors and it's the same for animals. Like I said, I haven't tried it on Hannah, but I detox myself every once in a while and I feel much better. Their website is http://www.holisticvetpetcare.com/index.htm. They list the ingredients for all their products, so you could show that to your vet pharmacy tech and see what they think. Hope Stuart feels better and take care of yourself too!

Glad to hear that Stuart is holding his own right now. Baby steps are still steps. We'll keep Stuart in our prayers...

As I was reading, I thought it sounded like he may have had a stroke too. I'm no vet either, but it does sound like that. I'm so glad he's doing better!

We are glad for better news for Stewie. We cats do have very sensitive neurological systems, so something toxic and/or a stroke both make sense. Mom is going to check out Hannah's suggested website, as it sounds interesting. We are all thinking about you and sending positive vibes your way.

Someone I know had a cat that had a stroke... Symptoms were similar to Stuart's -- Peaches is ~14yrs old and it took her about 4-5 days to get back to somewhat normal (able to eat crunchy food and use the litterbox), this was also her second stroke. She's still a little wobbly and can't jump up on things like a couch/bed. But I hear she's as feisty as ever. She came to her humans maybe a year ago (?!) when her previous owner dumped her outside after her first stroke and she couldn't use the litterbox right away. She's in MUCH better hands how!
