pit bull adoption

Sophie on Breeds - Wed, October 24 2007

my mommy has a friend who adopted a puppy about a year ago and was told it was a boxer mix. now, Roxy is full grown and obviously mostly pit bull. mommys' friend dosn't know what to do because she has a two and a half year old son who likes to play with the dog, which could be dangerous. However, Roxy is such a good dog--loving, happy, calm. The whole family loves her very much, but are afraid she could turn on the baby at any time. they don't want to take her to a shelter because they were told she would just be put down. any advice or maybe someone would be interested in adopting her?

Oh my gosh! Please talk to the several pit bull owners, who are on this site, about this. Please, please, please tell them not to give this baby up until they have talked to experienced pit bull owners.

Just because they have now found out that she is a Pit Bull or mix is no reason that they should get rid of her, fear her, think that this is a dangerous dog, or worry that she will harm their child. I know they are worried about what is in the best interest for the family but Roxy is also now part of this family. She has never given them any reason to think that she is a threat right? She is loving, gentle, and calm with the baby. Sounds like she is the perfect and common Pit Bull. Please try and convince your friend that they should not get rid of this dog. It sounds like a classic case of someone who is not educated on the TRUTH about Pit Bulls. What they know is the BS that the media feeds us to make for good stories on the evening news. They really need to educate themselves before making this kind of decision. Indy Pit Crew, Casa Del Toro, The Halfway House Pit Bull Rescue, and Pit Bull Rescue Central all have web sites with lots, and lots of great, free, and ACCURATE information about Pit Bulls. Environment, socializaiton, and training are the keys to a great Pit Bull or any dog. If they are worried about the stories they see or hear about Pit Bulls attacking children look deeper. When someone outside the media and unbiased to the situation truely investigates the attack it is usually the PARENTS fault. They were not being responsible with the situation and the dog had not been properly trained, handled, and socialized. Dogs and small children should NEVER be left unsupervised no matter what the breed. The parent has to be the pack leader and not allow the dog to become dominant or develope bad manners or social habits. There is no reason that Roxy can't continue to be the wonderful family dog that she has already proven she can be. Please, please, please don't abandon this wonderful creature. A Pit Bull can truely be the best thing that has ever happened to you. Don't miss this wonderful chance to experience that.

I just adopted Minnie the end of July, and she is a pit mix. My niece is two. She came over and Minnie was very good with her. Minnie is normally rambunctious, but she seemed to know to be a little gentler with my niece. I ALWAYS watch my dogs when kids are around. Any breed of dog can bite or turn on someone. I don't think pit bulls are any more likely than any other breed. The reason you hear more about them is because idiots get them, train them to fight or lock them up in the backyard and they're not properly socialized. When someone comes too close, the dog is either frightened or defensive and bites. A good number of breeds will respond that way if they're not properly socialized. Please let your friends know to do more research before they give up Roxy!! Waylon listed a lot of good sites to check. If she has a good personality, there is not reason to give her up. She can't help what breed she is.

I've met a few pit bulls in my life and they've been awesome with kids. Just because you find out that a dog is a different breed than what you originally thought doesn't change the dog's personality. The bad rap with pit bulls isn't because of the breed. Unfortunately it's just a breed that attracts trashy hoodlums for owners who make some of them the way they are. Any breed of dog can be mean and aggressive if raised in that type of environment.

Your mom's friend needs to come to the Luv-a-bull walk this coming Saturday on Monument Circle. It's primary objective is to educate the public about bully breeds. This event is being hosted by indy pit crew.
All of their questions and concerns can be addressed by experienced bully owners.

Pit Bulls were once called "the nanny dog" because parents trusted them with their kids so much. You mean that this dog was "ok" until they found out she's a Pittie? If she's a good family dog, WHO CARES what breed she is??!!
