microchips

Sophie on Health - Wed, October 24 2007

when we moved to our new place, my mommy and daddy had me micrchipped because i got out a few times and scared them to death. now my mommy is hearing things about the microchips causing cancerous tumors. does anyone know if this is true? the vet said it can't be removed.

Hmmm...I've never heard anything about that. All my pets are microchipped and when I worked at HSI I don't recall any animals ever having problems.

Mom just read a very small piece about this in the Nov. issue of Indy Tails. They have found that lab rats with microchips have seen a slightly higher cancer rate than those without. More research is being done. They said that veterinarians have not noticed any influx of pets with cancer since microchipping has become so common but they are keeping an eye on the situation. Bottom line, the benefits of being microchipped probably way out weigh the slight risk of possibly being more prone to cancer.
