Just when you think...

Charlie on Grief - Tue, October 23 2007

...you've heard it all, along come something else! Here's something a vet tech/rescue friend experienced recently:

"Our rescue took a kitten from his owners on Sat. because they said his leg was "messed up and smelled bad" and they couldn't afford to take him to a vet.

Upon getting the cat, they tell us the rest of the story. Apparently this kitten was born with a deformed paw. He was able to walk on it, but it made him clumsy, so they thought he would be better off without it.

Instead of taking him to a vet for a professional opinion, or for professional care, they tried to amputate the paw themselves AT HOME, WITH NO SEDATION, USING A F*CKING POCKET KNIFE!!!! Knowing absolutely nothing about what they were doing, they cut through the leg bone about two inches below the shoulder joint.

Now, I've seen amputations where the doctor knows what he's doing, has the right tools and the cat is under sedation - and even then it's not easy to amputate a limb. I can't imagine how long it took them to accomplish this, and the agony the poor cat must've gone through.

Because the knife was too dull for this task, they ended up mangling the bone and the tissue surrounding, as well as degloving (essentially skinning) the remaining leg up to the shoulder. Then they just wrapped it up in a bandage and assumed everything would be fine.

Well of course, it became horribly infected, started to stink, the cat started getting sick, and they realized (f*cking finally!) that they'd really f*cked up. That's when they called us and we told them we'd help but insisted they surrendered the cat to us, as well as their two other pets in the household (another cat and a dog I think).

They did so, and we amputated the remainder of the leg/shoulder today. This poor kitten is only about 3 mos. old and somehow is still very loving and trusting with people - I know I sure as hell wouldn't be in his place. He's doing well after the surgery, happily doped up on pain meds and getting tons of TLC.

We'll find him a good home, and his former owners will be reported to the authorities, as well as put on every DNA list we can find to hopefully keep them from ever owning another living creature again - even a f*cking goldfish if I could help it! Seriously, this got to me like nothing has in a while. I just can't imagine how much pain this poor little guy went through - all of it probably unnecessary because it sounds like his leg would've been fine if they'd just left it alone."

Mom was being nice when she wrote that post. SHE WAS CUSSIN UP A STORM WHEN SHE READ IT! I want to meet those people so I can put my CAMO Magic on them....there wont be enough stitchin material in all the hospitals to get them fixed up. Frankly, I'd like to go for the juglar. They don't need to be living on this planet.

Basil's mom - I am in complete shock!!! I could never think that someone would attempt something like that. I've seen some crazy stuff on Animal Cops but this is beyond insane. They deserve what ever the law can throw at them.

How did you resist trying to kill them with a dull pocketknife?

This is just horrible. I can't imagine what that little guy went through. Mommy and Daddy say that those people are dumb and don't deserve another pet. I am just glad he is now getting some good loving.

Fortunately for them, it happened in Cincinnatti. So I wasn't personally there, this is something that happened to someone I know. If I had been there, I think it would have been time to experiment on them... I work in a lab with access to all sorts of nasty chemicals, there's one in particular that can kill with just two drops at only 2% concentration. I've read about the way it kills (extremely slow and very painful death), I think they've just "volunteered" to allow me see it in action in person.

More of the story (Karma's a b!tch): "The man who actually tried to amputate this kitten's leg has died - can't say that's a great loss to the world. His other cat is 10 years old and has spent her entire 10 years of life in one room of this man's home - alone. He fed her and occasionally cleaned up after her, but that was it. This bothers me almost as much as the kitten. What kind of way is that to spend 10 years? What was WRONG with this man?? He had a dog too - don't know the details on that yet. Hopefully he was kinder to the dog than he was to the cats, but I doubt it. I never like to say something like this, but I'm glad this man is dead so he can't harm anymore living creatures."

I think that's the worst thing I've ever heard done to an animal! Just thinking about this gives me the creeps. It's something you'd see on a horror movie. What a F*ing NUT!!! I'm with you, Charlie. Thank God he can't harm any more animals.

Well, now this man has to answer to the man above about how he has treated these animals and he's not going to be happy!
