Stool Problems

Maverick on Health - Sun, October 21 2007

Hi everyone! We're kind'a desperate... Maverick's going into his third week with really soft stool (diarrhea-like). It all started two weeks ago when I decided to change his food from Eagle Pack to Innova Evo, because he wasn't consistently eating the Eagle Pack. We were out of Eagle Pack so we changed cold-turkey. He liked the Innova Evo food, but he started burping way too much and even vomiting a little. I took him to the vet after about three or four days. The vet said he has never heard of Innova Evo, gave us three medicines to give to Maverick and told us to give him iVet food instead. We did exactly like the vet said, but nothing changed. So last week I took Maverick back to the vet. Our vet was out, but there was a lady-vet filling in. She said to stop giving him the medicines 'cause they weren't doing anything. She did a rectal exam on Maverick, everything was fine, so she said to keep feeding him iVet, but to mix 1/4 cup of plain yogurt in with his food. She said to try this for 2 weeks. I'm starting to think we should go back to Eagle Pack. Maverick's not losing any weight and he acts normal and playful... he's just miserable when he has to go #2.

Any feedback is appreciated. We feel bad for our Mavvy.

I've been having the same problem for a couple of days and posted about this earlier. Check out my "home remedy for tummy" post, lots of people left me some good advice! :) Hope you feel better soon!

It sounds like you've changed his food a number of times, which is probably the main reason for Maverick's problems. EVO is a great pet food, but it doesn't work for all pets. Zoey had some problems when I first brought her home and started her on EVO, but I watched her for a few weeks and they started to go away. You would probably have the same issues if you abruptly changed your diet, it takes the body a while to adjust. I would stick to one kind of food for at least a month and watch to see if the problems stay the same, worsen or get better. You have a better chance then of determining what is causing the problem.

Sorry to hear about your problem Maverick. It will probably just take a little more time to get used to the different food. By the way, my Mom thinks you are one handsome Dude!

My mom agrees with Stuart's mom- Maverick is handsome! Whenever I have problems with #2, mom gives me cottage cheese which i LOVE!!!! That always helps firm me up, plus I LOVE IT!!!!!!

Hey Maverick! I feel your pain. Being a German shepherd myself we tend to have these problems. My mom has been through a lot with my diarrhea problems too. If the Eagle Pack wasn't bothering you then you should switch back. There were some foods that bothered me no matter how long my mom mixed them with my old food. In order to make your dry food yummier your mom should try canned Merrick dog food. It can be found at specialty food stores such as Pet Products Superstore. They also have a website where you can get more info. A vet tech recommended it because I find dry food too boring so I wasn't eating enough to be at an ideal weight but at the same time almost everything gives me diarrhea. My mom gives me that on my boring dry food to make me eat more and it doesn't bother my digestive system. Good luck to ya.

Maybe you developed an allergy to the food that your mommy usually feeds you. That's what happened to me. My mom fed me a mixture of plain white rice (for bulk and soothes my belly) and reduced-fat cottage cheese (for protein) and noticed a difference compared to when I ate normal food. Even the weeks and weeks of medicine didn't work like my mommy's mixture. My mommy talked to the vet and now I am on a special prescription dog food that my mommy loved so much she is now giving it to my sister too! Have your mommy ask your vet about "Iams/Eukanuba Low Residue" dog food. It's yummy, and it works. Good Luck..woof, Lewis!

My cousin Ace (yellow Lab) has an allergy to grains. He developed this when he was three. He is now on an a grain free diet. I am not sure what food his is on but he is now doing much better. Maybe you vet can check for a food allergy.

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions! Mom and dad have decided to follow the Vet's orders. They have, however, taken treats away (which I'm really bummed about) so that they can start ruling things out. I was fine with the treats before the food change... they just want to make sure it's the food what gives me diarrhea.

The didn't think I could be allergic to food, so that was a good suggestion! If the diarrhea persists, we'll probably ask the vet about food allergies, and we might be switching back to Eagle Pack even though I'm not too crazy about that food.

Thanks again!

EVO is good food, but can be too rich for some animals... resulting in the runs! That was the case for Alvin. I ended up putting them all on their old food, then switching over REEEEEEEEEEEEAL slowly. Most of the time transitioning over a week is OK, but that was too fast for Alvin. Ended up taking a couple of months, but the diarrhea has never returned and they can all eat EVO now. So you may still be able to feed him the EVO in time, just need to be patient with how fast he's switched over (once he's over the runs he has now).
