Crystals are more common in males than females, but aren't color-specific. Male cats have a narrower uthretha, so blockage can happen much easier in them. As a breed, I *think* that Persians are more prone to it as well. Sometimes cats can get blocked so quickly they die within a couple of days! My ex-bf didn't get his cat to the vet fast enough (not because I didn't tell him to do it ASAP), and the cat died.
They don't seem to be real sure were my crystals are coming from. We know it is not from eating dog food though. I only get my special cat food. The dogs gobble up their chow so fast I would be afraid to go near it for fear of being mistaken as food. Mom is going to pick up distilled water at the store today. Unfortunately that means she is going to have to give it to the dogs too. I will ONLY drink out of the dog dish so it doesn't do any good if that is not what is in there. Oh well she says. If it will fix the problem for good it is well worth it.
we had a cat many years ago that was constantly having blockage from crystals. (that was before the whole "good pet food" brands came about. he ate cat chow)anyhow, even though we fed him a special food from the vet, it didn't help, so we took him to dr. lee in anderson, who did a surgery (which was pretty new at the time)which basically made his "hole" that he urinates from very large. he had been catheterized so many times that he kept leaking urine, so this was the last effort to help my poor boy, sid. he healed very well, and lived several more years! if i had it to do over, i would have switched him to a raw diet as soon as the first blockage occurred. he would have more likely not had to have been catheterized so much, and would not have needed that special surgery, either.
