Hannah? and other trained cats....

Puma on Training - Thu, October 18 2007

How did you go about leash training? Puma does have a (ferret) harness, but its not working great; he won't walk with it on, but just sits there.
Tips?

None of mine will "walk" on a leash like a dog, they will go out on a leash/harness and sniff around... like a cat! To get them used to it, I just put the harness on while inside for a short time and played with them while they wore it--to associate harness with fun. Gradually increased it, now Alvin and Charlie will go out from time to time, the other three don't like to go outside.

Like Charlie, I am not trained to walk on a leash like a dog...meaning I go where I want to go. Are you taking Puma somewhere he wants to sniff around or are you just putting the harness on in the house? I started by putting the harness on her and then plopping her out on the front porch. She was timid at first, but she slowly started walking around. I have a harness with a bungee leash, you can get it at Petco for under $20. With more training, I could probably teach Hannah to walk beside me...but I do it more so she can get fresh air outside than exercise. I did teach her to stand up and tap my hand for a treat, so be patient and it will come. I think ocicats are known for being able to train to do many things too, so that should help.
