Anemic

Bella on Health - Wed, October 17 2007

Well, Bella went to the vet for her spaying, but that didn't go as planned. I agreed for them to do blood work on her first, and as it turns out she is anemic. The vet said her blood count is about 10% below where it should be. Talk about being freaked out. I was not expecting the vet to call yesterday, and since I was in class, I had to wait until afterwards to listen to the voicemail.

So they did a fecal sample to test for parasites to see if that was what caused her anemia, but that test came back completely negative. So we don't know what caused it.

Since she was just about out of the food I was giving her, I went ahead and bought a different kind. We went with Canidae all stage formula, or something like that I think. I had to find something that didn't have corn (it gives her gas). The lamb & rice formula food I first fed her gave her really bad gas, and I looked for something with iron it. It was either Canidae or Evo, I went with the one I'd actually heard of. Lol.

So she will be going back to the vet in a month, and they will check her blood level then, and if all is well she will be getting fixed. In the mean time, I'm worried because my mom's Bichon (who is not fixed), is getting VERY interested in her, and I'm not there to keep an eye on him. I got an e-mail from a lady that has one of Bella's sisters, and she is starting to go into heat. So somebody is gonna have to wear diapers or something. Lol.

Oh my...keep those two apart....I mean apart. Buy a Belly band for the boy and a diaper for the girl and do not let them anywhere unsupervised. You'll have to separate them anyway, because when she is receptive for the fews days, they will be inseperable...and it's gross. So, baby gates or whatever you have to do. They can tie quick and then you will have a mess!! LOL! And most likely, they are pregnant. Candiae is awesome! You'll love it and she'll probably do really well on it. I hope her anemia gets better!

I went into heat right before Mom/Dad went on vacation when I was a puppy. I wore diapers (not doggie velcro -- they gave me doggy pads and put them in child underwear with a tail hole)the entire week they were gone -- didn't like them much but I wore them. I would rip the doggie diaper off if they tried to put it on me. Better than the mess in the house! (Daddy wasn't sure on fixing with me as he was with Scouter despite Mom's push).

How about seperate HOUSES! Dog can get really weird during "that time"...

You will at least need separate crates if they must be in the same house during this time. Hormones speak louder than baby gates. Sydney came into heat right after we got her, and we had to board her for a few days, as our xmas house guests brought an intact dog. If you are not completely vigilant, they will find a way to be together.

I hope Bella will start perking up soon! It's got to be hard to be away from here when you know she's not feeling well. We'll keep our paws crossed for the whole situation.
