Parrots with High Blood Pressure?

Holly Berry on Health - Mon, October 15 2007

Okay can anyone help my Mom?

Today I was at the vet all day because I have decided to pull my feathers out.

The vet has determined that I have very high blood pressure.

This is freaking my mom out. Of course I am just sitting on on my rope and pulling some feathers out that are just not right.

Can anyone help an upset Mom and a going bald bird?

I had no idea that parrots could get high blood pressure. I've always heard that they pick their feathers because they're bored or a little not right in the head. It makes sense though if they feel weird or hurt that they would pluck their feathers. I can't really find anything on line about this topic either. Did they give her medicine for this? The only thing I could find is that they should get 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep a day. Good luck with her.

what are you feeding her? plucking their own feathers is usually a sign of major stress, or like hootie said, brain issues (had one person describe it as "going insane"). i've never heard that this can be CAUSED by high blood pressure. maybe it's some kind of stress, causing the high blood pressure, and the feather plucking. many birds never quit that plucking thing, once they have started, if it's pretty bad. :(

I always mess my tale feathers up and brake them off.
Has any thing changed around the house? Even if you give him the same food all the time. Sometime the store chang idems in it with out you knowing. please keep us update. I didn't know bird's got High Blood Pressure. I know about the stress thing. Oh , dose any one smoke in you home. I know that's not good.

Thanks for everyone's comments on my problem.

I eat a pellet diet - along with vegtables & fruit in the morning.

Things around the house have not changed.

People my mom works with say the vet is taking advantage of her if she goes through with the additional tests.

I have been good at leaving all my pin feathers alone right now - but every so often i do still pull a feather out and toss it on the floor.

Mom is trying to keep my busy having to look for my food in the cage - it does seems to help.

My mom is also going to bed early so I get more sleep.

Thanks for everyone's ideas.

after 14 years, my african grey suddenly pulled many chest feathers which freaked me out. Seems that Dockie-boy has been a girl all these years. She acturally laid 4 eggs. My breeder told me that hens do this to allow body heat to incubate the eggs more efficiently. (No the eggs weren't fertle and didn't hatch.) Now that she's done nesting, the pins are coming in after a heavy molt. I sort of hope she waits another 14 years to get broody again.
