Why collars are important...

Rusty on Laws - Sat, October 13 2007

Hah...speak of the devil.

Today I disappeared and mom and dad didn't even notice--they thought I was upstairs sleeping like usual...all day I was gone. Mom received a phone call from her next door neighbor at about 6:00 this evening saying, "Hey Alena, it's Angie...Your kitty has been in my garage all day. I'm going to stick him on the screened porch and you can come around and get him or let me know if you'll be home late and I'll just bring him in my house."

Anyway, mom got right up and went over and got me--Angie lives 15 feet away. Of course I didn't go anywhere...I was just hanging out with Angie's daughter and her friends... and since they pet me...well...why would I have left?

Moral of the Story...mom says thank God I had my collar on. Although anyone could tell that I am a housecat considering I'm shaved into a "lion cut" right now...LOL! It's the first time I've ever gotten out in the 6 years mom's had me!

Microchipping is a better bet than a collar. Most cats have safety collars, which allows the collars to break if the cat becomes caught on something (preventing injury or strangulation). If the collar breaks, then their identification is gone too.

Microchipping is only as good as the person who finds the cat. There's a LOT of people out there who do *NOT* know that most vets can scan for a chip (in addition to ACC and HSI), even emergency vets have the scanners, so a pet can be scanned 24/7. This is why my cats have both collars that have tags with their names and my phone number in addition to the chip. They may break away, they may not... I prefer having two methods of possible return since not everyone knows about microchipping.

I am also micropchipped and I carry my microchip tag on my collar. All mom's pets are microchipped.
