Nail Trimming

River Tipper Carte on Grooming - Sat, October 13 2007

Okay Okay. I'm sorry I made everyone mad on not trimming their dogs nails.
What I am saying is, if any part of the nail touches the floor when walking they are to long and if you think taking them to someone else to do it is better for them you need to think again. And if you don't go in with your dog when they are doing the trimming you need to,if they say no, go somewhere else. Go to PetSmart, do those dogs look happy when they are being groomed?
Have confidence in yourself and your pet, they don't need to be held down or put in a noose for this. Training, a everyday massage for your dog and patience from you is all it takes for about five weeks and you can do it. And maybe you won't even need to trim, just use a emery board and your done.
Sorry I upset so many. Send me a personal message I'll gladly give my # for your to call me, or long distance I'll call you. I'm hitting OK now.

i have to put my two cents in, here, because you seem to be saying that just ANYONE can do nail trims. well, not everyone CAN. depending on their own physical conditions, age, self confidence, etc....not just everyone can cut their pets nails. i don't know how long you have been a dog trainer, but if you have not been a groomer, well, it may be hard for you to understand. i have been grooming dogs for almost 18 years. there have been some dogs, over the years, that we just could not do the nails. some dogs need sedation, they are so bad, and we are not a vet, so we send them there.i refuse to push a dog so far that they get upset, defecate, or just plain freak out, for a simple nail trim. the pets well being is my first and foremost concern. not every person has the CONFIDENCE in THEM SELF to get the job done. some people are afraid of their own dogs. i mean, there are many, many reasons people do not cut their own dogs nails, or groom them themselves. not everyone is cut out to deal with animals, so they pay professionals to do this. also, it is not always a good idea for people to be present when their dog is being groomed, or having a nail trim. i'd say that 90% of dogs will NOT behave (jump around, be squirmy, act like a brat) when their owner is PRESENT. most do much, much better if the owner is not around. i have worked in obedience training, as well as being a groomer, and although there are some parallels, being a trainer is much different than what i do. how many years have you been an obedience trainer, what training have you had? just curious.

i completely agree with hound girl. i am also a groomer, and also dont know many dogs who look like they enjoy grooming. most tolerate it and just kind of sit there, but they dont really look happy or miserable. and some dogs really dont like being groomed, for whatever reason. there are a lot of dogs with nail trimming issues. you are a dog trainer, you should know that most of the time, the problem is that of dominance and control, then the actual nail trimming. not to mention that most dogs i do have a problem BECAUSE of the owners, and they usually do not want to admit any wrong doing of their pet, or change their behavior. but i guess you would rather live in a world where we groomers say "nope sorry i dont do nail trims b/c that is something you can do". dog owners can do anything they want for/to their dog, including grooming. some choose to have others do it and i dont think you should fault anyone for that

Our vet does Kirby's nails. He freaks out. I do all of my other furkids nails. I KNOW my limit.
