Teeth Cleaned?

Payton on Grooming - Fri, May 25 2007

My mommy recently took us to the vet for our checkup and the vet recommended that we get our teeth cleaned. I heard mommy gasp when the vet told her the total cost...(well over $400 for my bro and me) plus, I know mommy is really worried about the fact that they have to "put us out" to brush our teeth. We chew lots of bones - doesn't that help? Is there any way around getting this done by the vet? We're pretty good with mom...maybe she could do it? Help!

The vet does way more than just brush the teeth during a dental! I've had my teeth cleaned and it was no big deal. Once the teeth are cleaned (or if started when you're young) there are ways to prevent/reduce dental issues like prescription food or special treats as well as tooth brushing (like people, but with a special paste for pets). It's also good once the teeth are cleaned to keep up the dental maintenence to prevent additional expensive dental work!

I've had to get my teeth cleaned several times, and so have some of my cousins. It's not that big of a deal and when your mom picks you up you get babied for at least a day or 2! I mean super attention. The vet does it becacuse they have to scrape the plaque build up off and check for gum disease. It can't be done when you're awake because you can't keep still with your mouth open for hours. My mom says sometimes she wishes her dentist would just put her out for dental visits. After the vet cleans them, and the price is reasonable no different than anyhwere my mom has heard of, your mom can brush you teeth once a week and maybe not ever have the vet do it again! Your vet will tell her all about it. Or at least he should.

We get our teeth brushed weekly with our favorite, Chicken toothpaste (we get it from our vet's office). I've been doing it for so long, I even have my own SpongeBob spin toothbrush! Makes it fast & easy -- and no need for dental trips to the vets!

Hi Payton. I have never had my teeth cleaned in my 4 years of doggie-hood. My vet says my teeth are the best he has ever seen. I go to the butcher and get REAL knuckle bones and chew on those about every two weeks. They don't splinter and I have the choppers that Hollywood craves for. Some vets tell you not to do real bones (we have had problems with other types of bones at the store) but these knuckles are DE-licious.

I had my teeth cleaned for the first time at age 12. The tartar was really bad and created a risk of gum infection. Mine cost about $70 because I did have to be put under (that's what you really pay for), and I was reeling "drunk" from the anesthesia when I got home... but you could really see a difference in my teeth and gumline.

My brother Gremlin and I are four years old, and we had our teeth cleaned for the first time earlier this year. We both ended up with pnuemonia becuase of the germs that came loose and had to be hospitalized one weekend. I even had to have an IV! I was so glad when mommy took me home, but she had to give us medicine for weeks on end becuase THEN I got conjunctivitis and an ulcer in my eye, probably from my immune system being so low.

It will be a long time before mommy gets our teeth cleaned again.
