Want! But can't have.

Alvin on Shopping - Sat, October 06 2007

Must say this first, I don't believe in buying from a breeder and have rescued all my cats from various shelters. Though I do have a few breeds that I'd like to have... and some are harder to find than others.

One of them was the Siamese (I'm a sucker for blue eyes), I adopted Cyrus last summer.

Another breed I like is the Scottish Fold -- there's something so cute about those funny ears, round head and eyes... I found one online at PetFinder.com last summer, but I lived too far for a home visit, it would have been a 10hr drive each way and that was the closest one!

Guess who showed up at HSI in the "found cats" section? This guy: http://www.indyhumane.org/animals/foundcats.htm?id=3572870 If he's not reclaimed and passes a temperment test, he'll go up for adoption.

I WANT him! But can't really afford another cat, even if I didn't have a senior with medical issues.

*sigh*

If only he'd shown up 1.5 years sooner.

But I have an Alvin with his funny floppy ear. I tell people he's half-fold, so just one folded ear instead of two. ;)

Gosh, he's cute!! I can see why you'd want him, too. There's NO VACANCY at our house!!

Oh, I've got a siamese! (Alvin's bro is Cyrus, a flame-point) Last summer I was looking for a siamese OR a 'fold'. There were tons of siamese within two hrs of Indy... Really hard to find a scottish fold in a rescue. Figures that now the "NO VACANCY" sign is lit, one shows up in Indy!

I love Britsh Blue cats. If I were ever to get a purebred, that would be the one. I like the Scottish Folds too. Those ears are adorable. I don't think Minnie and Beverly would be good with cats, or I would have one. There's one at the FACE clinic that I am in love with.

Oh my gosh even his name fits him! He totally looks like a Connery!

For your viewing pleasure, you should check out www.purebredcatrescue.org. That's where Zoey came from and they have all kinds of purebred cats. A lot of those cats were taken from shelters across the Midwest, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin. It's a great place to rescue a purebred cat because they understand the needs of purebreds, which can vary from cute mutty cats, and your less likely to have lots of vet bills after you bring the cat home.

No 'folds' in the purebredcatrescue site! Closest one I found last summer was in Nebraska, which is why I figured I'd not find one close to me anytime soon... so I went the Siamese route. Folds, unless bred by someone foolish (such as breeding folded ear cat with another folded ear cat), are fairly low-maintenance and generally have good health. Much like 'mutts' do. Apple-head siamese (like Cyrus) are the same way. It's the modern siamese that can have the health issues. I fostered a Persian in '05 (video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r51_lGtOKpY ) and learned that even though she was super sweet, the maintenance level was too high for me!

HSI has had a few Cornish Rex in the past, no Sphinx that I've seen so far. There's rumors of one (Rex) being there now, just not yet available for adoption. They're neat cats! Though I'd have to get them a little sweater or something since I'm cheap and have my thermostat set pretty low at night or when I'm not home.

I don't even get to meet the kitty. He's already been adopted! *sigh*
