i personally think the dyson animal is great. when we got ours we vacuumed the floor with our old vac and then took the animal out. the animal sucked up about one inch of dust/dirt in addition to a giant furball of fur that was still in the carpet.
i will say, it is pricey...but there are no bags to deal with, no HEPA filters to change. i think the suction is stronger than with any other vac i've owned. but honestly, we bought the dyson after we got married and put a bunch of our Target giftcards together (i think we only paid about $150 out of pocket).
Another Dyson Animal owner here. I have five cats and dream of going hardwood one day... But until then, I needed something that could really suck the litter and fur out of the carpet. I LOVE the mini-brush attachment, it really comes in handy when sweeping the stairs and removing fur from furniture (Animal model is the only one that comes with it). I got mine for $400 with a 20% off coupon from Linens'n'Things. Those coupons now exclude Dyson products though.
We have a Dyson Animal and love it! It has never lost suction--just like the ad says. The ease of emptying out the canister is great. My dad has asthma and mom recently got an e-mail that said the Dyson has been approved by the allergy & asthma society because it does not shoot the dust, etc back into the air. Yes, $549 is a lot for a vacuum, but this one is well worth it.
We have a Dyson Animal as well!! I LOVE IT! With 6 furkids, it really takes care of the "tumble weed". The little mini brush is awesome for the stairs. I'd say it was worth the moola. We got ours from Linens N' Things when they had an offer that is you bought a Dyson, they gave you a $50 gift card for the store.
The ChemDry folks all use Dysons and swear by them...but they bought reconditioned ones online...check that out! I bought mine at the vacuum store and have been very happy with it..Its a Rykaar (sp?) and has that 99% hepa filter...so it doesn't shoot dirt right back out in the exhaust. You have to put a new bag in very often, though, like when its only 1/2 full, they say.
Sounds like the Dyson people are winning out but you'll never get my Rainbow away from me. It's also great for cleaning the air for those with allergies. Once that hair and dander hit the water of the Rainbow it will never float into the air again. I have a $500 sweeper but I'll take the Rainbow (more expensive yet) any day. It is the only sweeper that I have used on my hardwoods that doesn't just bounce stuff around. It has a hardwood attachment that works great! It's a little more inconvenient to use but "it don't get no better" than Rainbow.
