LABRADOODLES

Nine on Behavior - Sat, October 06 2007

In my opinion, I am not that fond of Labradoodles. I mean, people are paying hundreds of dollars to get a dog like you can find at the shelter! There is absolutely nothing wrong, except Labradoodles are mixed breeds, and they are not even registered in the AKC! Labradoodles are great dogs, but they are not purebred!

NO OFFENSE TO OWNERS OF LABRADOODLES

Oh, you don't even WANT to get my mommy started on the whole "designer dog" thing. They are mixed breeds. The only thing that makes them 'different' than mutts is that with a mutt you don't know the breed of each of the parents. Mommy once got in an argument with a lady selling Shih-Poos when mommy said that she wouldn't pay $300 for a mutt. The lady flipped out!! Then she said that her shih-poos were no different from me (a purebred corgi), and asked how my mom knew I was even purebred. HA! Crazy people. I think it's just a way for the puppy millers and now the backyard breeders to get more money out of dogs they couldn't get as much out of before.

Oh, and as far as Labradoodles go, here's where this whole thing started: http://www.australianlabradoodleclub.us/

With the responsible breeders, not the money makers.

I went to a labradoodle farm...... my Daddy had to do website work for the man. So we went, he had kennels outside, had 2 great pyrenses with OPEN WOUNDS on their noses from flies, the 2 great pyrenses were old and matted. The labradoodle puppies fell in their own poop !!!!!!!! BUT they kept thier 2 doxies inside because "they're small" !!!!!!! HA !!!! YOU STUPID BREEDER !!!!! I HATE THAT MAN NOW !!!!! He sells them for like 1000$ !!!!!!!

i completely agree, and understand your point. (i will rephrase, so no one gets offended)what you are saying is you don't agree with breeding purebreds, to come up with these mixes, then sell them for big bucks, as if they were some "rare" breed, right? I AGREE!! now, i have a mixed breed dog, and i have groomed lots and lots of mixes. personally, i do not see the purpose of breeding two purebreds on purpose, to MAKE a mutt!!! mixed breed dogs are great, some i like better than their purebred counterparts. IMO, the labradoodles and goldendoodles don't always seem to learn very fast, many have a major problem FOCUSING . i assume it is the combination of the breeds it is mixed with. goldens and labs can be VERY hyper, as can poodles. i know that the site manager's dog is likely a labradoodle, and he's not like that at all. (of course, i do suspect there may be something else, maybe some kind of terrier, in there ;o)of all the large "doodles" we have had come in for grooming, i can not say any of them were NOT hyper and unruly. they also DO SHED....A LOT. so now there are tons of them in rescue, because people bought into that "non-shedding" thing, and it is BS. ALL DOGS WILL SHED, to some degree. some very little, some a lot. i just hate seeing people with good intentions, with these mixed breeds (whether it's the large doodles, shih/poo mixes, yorkie/poo, etc, etc)get "taken". i know someone who spent about $1000 on a "yorkie-poo", and i am positive it is a wire-haired dachshund mix!!! she could have gotten a very nice specimen of any breed, from a good breeder, for that money!i'm seeing lots and lots of the smaller mixes with issues like knee/hip problems, eye problems, allergies, TEMPERAMENT problems. some are so flippin hyper you cannot get a hold of them!! (anything mixed with bichon seems to be very overly hyper, more so than the purebred bichon. that breed had been so screwed up by BYBers over the last 15-20 years. they used to be a VERY calm and laid back breed!)anyhow, i do see your point. i posted about the dog DNA testing, maybe down the road, folks will HAVE TO DNA test their dogs, before they can even breed them, to show what breeds they are truly made up with. i suspect that many out there, being sold as _____-doodle/poo, are not what they are said to be. regardless, i love any dog, just not the people who take advantage of other people who buy dogs.

I have a 1 1/2 year old labradoodle and she is the ideal dog for me. I did not pay thousands of dollars for her or get her from a puppy mill. I could not ask for a more perfect companion!

Okay, lets clear this up! I am a Heinz mix that happens to look quite a bit like a "backyard labradoodle", according to "breeders". I say...whatever! I'm just glad that some sucker (ooops...I mean Site Manager) came and sprung me loose from Animal Control 4 years ago. I've met lots of labradoodles, though, and they're usually cool dogs. And, Canine Companions breed their own dogs to train for disabled people; they're goldens and lab crosses, with all the best qualities of each.

Although all my furkids come from kill-shelters (and I love them so!), I know that the variety of dogs we have now came from the mixing of genes throughout history to get desirable traits. That said, I know poodles are good for people with allergies and of course labs are gentle giants...why not mix the two as long as it is respectable breeders and dog lovers doing this....and not backyard breeders or puppy mill operators...DON"T SUPPORT PUPPY MILLS BY BUYING MIX_BREED, DESIGNER DOGS from pet stores.
