I read this awhile back in a local magazine. It's ten ways that pet lovers can help the environment and create a better world for us and our pets.
-Adopt from a shelter. When you adopt rather than buy a pet, you are decreasing pet reproduction meaning there will be fewer animals entering shelters.
-Spay or neuter your pet. Again, this decreases the shelter load which in turn saves money. It's also much healthier for your pets to be altered.
-Make better food choices. Check out organic foods for your pets. Good for the environment since organic farming doesn't use pesticides, synthetic fertilizers or growth hormones.
-Use eco-friendly cleaning products. You can use many things you already have around your house to clean. Try baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, etc and make your house safer for your pets.
-Go green in the litter box. Trt litter made from all natural materials like pine shavings and corn cobs or from recycled newspaper. These are 100% biodegradable and great at blocking odor. Best thing is that you can then compost the litter and use it in the garden.
-Use biodegradable poop bags. Many pet stores carry these and you can put them into your compost pile as well. It takes a traditional plastic bag more than 100 years to break down.
-Buy eco-friendly toys. Look for items made from natural fibers or manufactured with recycled material.
-Grow your own catnip. This will save you money and assure that your kitty has only natural things in his nip.
-Compost your pet's poop. It's a little tricky to do so check out www.nrcs.usda.gov for more info.
-Plant a tree in honor of your pet. We can all use more greenery since so much of it is being cut down to make room for shops and homes. If you want to do it as a gift, check out www.treegivers.com that will plant it and give you a certificate, sympathy letter and card.
So there's a few pretty painless ways to help the environment and by doing so, help us and our pets.
