Did anybody else FREAK OUT at th

Rosie on Behavior - Thu, May 24 2007

To any of you who live downtown, did you freak out when they set off those pyrotechnics to scare off the birds every evening from November through March? It used to be that I wasn't scared of ANYTHING... but when I heard those loud things go off I hid under the bed and shook all over! It got so bad that I wouldn't go out at all in the evening, and when I did go out I wouldn't go anywhere near the circle! My Mom was so worried that she called Dr. Sampson, and he put me on antidepressants and tranquilizers. Wow... I felt like I was stoned all the time! Now that the birds have gone away they don't do it anymore and my Mom was able to take me off the tranquilizers. But I still have to stay on the antidepressants because now ANY loud noise freaks me out! My life just isn't the same and Mom says I lost my personality. I don't get it... I mean, aren't birds supposed to fly in the sky? And these loud things didn't scare the birds anyway... they just scared me!

That is horrible!!! My mom said we would have been scared, too! She worked downtown and never understood the purpose of scaring the birds away! She said it was annoying. I feel for ya, buddy!! And with the 4th of July coming...jeeeesh! Hate this time of year!

That would've scared me to death too!! But you got to remember you're a Beagle so technically you're tough. Maybe if you mom makes loud noises around the house regularly and ignores you when you get scared you'll grow out of it. But I still thing heavy tranquilizer for the race weekend and 4th of July are in order. If you're gonna be scated why not be stoned too?

I'm afraid of thunderstorms and fireworks. My folks bought a Comfort Zone DAP (dog appeasing pheromone)diffuser. It's like a plug in air freshener that emits a substance that mimics the pheromones released by a nursing mother dog. It also comes in a spray and a collar form for your dog to wear. While it doesn't take all the fear away, I am much more comfortable than without it. One warning: it's expensive, but I think it's worth it. They also give me an herbal concoction called Rescue Remedy (available at natural food stores like Georgetown Market)if they know there will be thunderstorms and that seems to help, too. Maybe these would help ease your anxiety and help get you off those meds or at least lower the dose!
