Dog Parks for Small Dogs

Jude on Activities - Mon, September 24 2007

Hi everyone...I just read the post about the pug getting ganged up on and swarmed by large dogs at the BRBP.

I've been hoping that someone would open a dog park that has a section for small dogs! Both Stevie and Jude love to go to dog parks, but Stevie always gets swarmed and sometimes the dogs get too rough for Jude's taste. My biggest fear is that a large dog will go into prey drive and go after Stevie...scary scary scary.

Maybe us little dogs can stick together and encourage someone to open a park for little guys...maybe for dogs under 35lbs--they would also have to be the type of small dog that doesn't do well in a tradtional park. I've seen some Corgi's at regular parks that hold their own quite well! But, this park could be for us guys who don't like to be trampled by 70lb dogs and who prefer to play with a dog at our level.

Or maybe we can encourage an already existing park to create or expand a section that is suited for small dogs only.

What do you guys think?

Yup...and Alf would too :) But we know Delilah and Alf are one in the same...GUARDIANS OF SMALL DOGS AND THAT IS THEIR SOLE PURPOSE IN LIFE.

I'd love to go to the bark park, but I'm only 11 pounds and some of those dogs are really big!!! Keep me posted on a section of a park just for the short dogs . . . like ME!! :)

I think this is a great idea, and I loved the possibility of using the alternative area of the BRBP since it is nicely shaded, and kind of cozy. Plus it's real close to my house :) In the past I have not found them to be very responsive to suggestions, but that may have changed.

Excellent idea, and one I've had for a long time. Us little ones need a place to play where we won't feel threatened by the larger kids. Most of them mean no harm, but their size can be intimidating to us. I wonder how we can make this happen? Let's put our heads and paws together and think of a way, ok?

Pierson Bark Park in Fishers has a special area for small dogs. Go to piersonbarkparks.com and read all about it!

Hey, my mom emailed the Broad Ripple park manager and asked about having a small dog area. He said it's something they're looking into, so maybe someday it'll happen. In the meantime, my mom says we'll try the Pierson Bark Park that Kirby told us about. They do have a small dog area, so I'm gonna try it out this weekend (I hope!). Small dogs, unite!! Maybe we'll see some of you there sometime. :-)

That's good about the Broadripple Park...I wish there was one just a little closer to us! Fishers and Broadripple are really hard for us to get to during busy times. If it's not busy, we can be there in 25-30minutes...no big deal on a weekend or whatever...if it's rush hour, there's no way! Eagle Creek is only 15 minutes from us. HSI's dog park is about 20, but they only allow altered animals so we can't go there anyway. It would also be nice if you could get access to several parks under one membership--that would be really convienent for a lot of people.
