Why do I chew on my feet?

Annie on Health - Thu, September 20 2007

Hello everyone! My mom's noticed that I have a really bad habit of chewing on my feet. She's not sure if I'm just weird or if there's something wrong with me. I don't act like my feet bother me and there isn't any irritation or other obvious reason for me to gnaw on my tootsies. Does anybody else do this?

Could be allergies. I had a golden retriever once who had to take benedryl every day...he started chewing on his feet and I took him to the vet who told me about the benedryl.

Yep, my mom calls me a "paw licker" but it is because of allergies. I also chew on my back legs sometimes. Mom gives me allergy medicine every night and it helps. Good luck!

I had a German Shepherd who was licking constantly and it also happened to be during a very stressful point in my life. I took her to the vet and found out she had OCD, probably from my stress. The vet recommended trying to keep her occupied, such as giving her stuffed kongs, etc. If you put peanut butter in kongs and freeze them, it keeps them busy even longer (also helped some of Marty's early puppy destructive ways).

Both Binx and I lick our feet - sometimes they bleed. I'm going to tell mom about taking benedryl.

I lick mine to. I also pull on the hair on the bottoms of my feet. I have lots of hair! I will have my mom try the benedryl thing. How much should I get each day? Thanks for all the help. My mom and dad just thought the hair bothered me between my toes...hmm...maybe this will help me!

While Benedryl helps, its treating the symtom not the cure. For those who this problem is serious, an alergy test would be best. Once you find out what the cause of alergy is, you can then try to eliminate it. Grass alergies can be a problem. A better solution, IMO, would be to wipe their feet with an antibacterial type wipe or a paw bathing with an antibacterial shampoo. I wouldnt medicate my dogs unless absolutely needed. And always consult your Vet before medicating with an OTC human medicine.

I've been doing that too. My mom called the vet finally and he said 1/2 a tablespoon of benedryl twice a day will make me feel better and it seems to be working.
