Urinary Tract Infection

Gunner on Health - Mon, September 17 2007

It seems as though Gunner has developed another urinary tract infection (his second since the spring). He has been leaking urine again tonight. Of course, I'm taking him into the vet tomorrow to get his urine tested to make sure.

I know that bacteria in the urethra is the main cause of UTIs, so I'm changing the water dishes tomorrow as well, because they are starting to get old. Even though I clean them out everyday, I want to eliminate every possible cause of the problem.

I was wondering if you know of any more natural treatments for UTIs? I know Doc will prescribe Amoxicillin again, which did help. I'm just curious about any alternatives that may help.

Also, do you think it's normal for a dog to start getting frequent UTIs? Gunner will only be 7 this year, which is not at all old. I'm just worried he may be developing an incontinence problem. I hope not.

Thanks for the input!

mikey had a REALLY bad UTI a few years ago. he almost died, he was so sick. IMO, your vet needs to give something different, because the amoxicillin is not getting it gone all the way. sounds like you need to get a stronger antibiotic, and also give it for double the normal amount of time, to assure it is GONE, GONE, GONE! there have been a couple times, shortly after this UTI, that mikey had to go back on the antibiotics, but {knock on wood} he's not had any incidents for a very long time. i try to make sure he drinks PLENTY of water, and i even add it into his food. i also give him 1000 mg of vitamin C, and one cranberry pill a day. i take him out a lot to potty, JUST to be sure he is emptying his bladder enough, and i do get overly worried sometimes, if doesn't pee every time, LOL. my husband says i'm a worry wart.good luck at the vet, please keep us posted, ok?

Ask your vet about doing a urine culture... it's more expensive, but it'll tell him which antibiotic would be most effective in fighting the UTI. Especially since you just got over one not too long ago.

He's going in at 1o til' noon today. I'll definitely ask about doing a culture instead. If it's more likely to help, price doesn't matter. Also, I'm writing out a list of questions to ask, so that I don't forget any. I just hope he doesn't have another problem which is leading to him getting UTIs more often. And Mikey, I worry too much as well.

Mikey has some good tips...Btw... I was reading a Dog Fancy last night that my mom brought in a there is an article about UTI's in dogs and homeopathic treatments for it...you should check it out. I think it's from this month--it has a Pointer and an Afghan hound on the front cover.

The new Dog Fancy is out? YAY! The feature is the GSP, and I've been dying for it. How fitting that it would have the UTI article. Isn't it strange how some things work out?
