Humane Society

Sr. Gunner First Class on My Blog - Thu, September 13 2007

My mom lived in Mississippi and she had got dogs from the Humane Society down there. She had them till they passed or had to be put down do to they wore to ill. They wore a flat fee all DOG's wore $50.00 and all CAT's wore $20.00. And they fixed the animal befor they came home. Or if they wore to young. You got a papper to come back and have it done for free. And I know Mississippi is a very poor state. Now why is it they could do that and here in Indiana. A dog or cat is in the $100.00's?

That's a very good question, since we last heard about HSI asking more for some dogs than others.

Things must be different in Indy because up here(Lafayette and Frankfort) the Humane Societies have a flat rate adoption fee for their dogs and cats. I think the adoption fee for a dog is around $75 now. Mom remembers when she adopted her first dog 13 years ago, the adoption fee was only $40!! But I also know that the Humane Societies up here get some monetary help from the county. It is NOT cheap to run a rescue operation and I think they are just trying to cover some basic costs by setting adoption fees in the $100's.

I don't know what their operating costs are, but I do know that the Humane Societies up in Northwest Indiana charge one flat rate for their adoptees. They also have less of a "kill" ratio. I know the gal that runs the Northwest Indiana Humane Society in Gary runs on a shoestring budget, yet she is able to save/place a lot of dogs and cats. Makes you wonder. . .

HSI in Johnson County does not have a shelter. They rely totally on foster homes. They are basically a no-kill shelter unless the dog is unadoptable due to behavior issues.

I just saw your post, but I was adopted from HSI. Dogs are $95 and puppies are $120. If a pure bred comes in, it can range up to $250. It kinda makes me mad, but it didn't bother mom to pay $120 for me since it was going to HSI. When we stopped to think about it, it made sense for pure breds and puppies to be more as an incentive for people to buy dogs as well. Plus, I think if you're going to spend $100 on a dog, it's an investment, and you're going to take care of it... just a thought.
