No Help When Needed

Waylon Alan on Shopping - Fri, September 07 2007

My momma was mad after she got home.

She happened to be near the Indy Humane Society yesterday and decided to drop by for a visit. She really didn't want to cause sometimes it makes her sad because she can't adopt anymore animals but she was peer-pressured and coerced into going by her boss. Plus her boss was driving so she didn't have much choice. So they went and visited all the puppies and kitties and petted them and tried to make them feel better. Eventhough Momma was sad for them that they had to be there she was happy to see that there were alot of empty cages and maybe she at least brought a little brightness to their day by visiting.

After visiting the animals Momma and her boss browsed the different items available for sale in the lobby. Many nice leashes, collars, toys, treats, and bowls. Mom has been wanting to get me a new collar but has been waiting for just the right one. She found one that she loved and was soooo excited. The price was right, the size was right, everything was perfect!!!

So she turns around with collar in one hand, money in the other, looking for someone to give the money to. She patiently waits....and looks...and waits...to her displeasure she finds that there is only ONE guy in the lobby who appears to be working there and he is sitting at a table appearantly training someone, and taking care of the adoption process of a very lucky dog. Which is GREAT!!!! The problem is, here it is basically lunch time, my momma wants to give someone some money, and there are three other ladies in front of her waiting for help that doesn't look like will be coming soon. At a time when working folks, those who will actually be making money and have means to support the needs of a pet, are able to make it by when the shelter is open, which may be only during their lunch period, they can't get any help!! Two of the people had kennel papers from animals that I would assume they were interested in adopting. The other lady waiting was in a work uniform with food and a toy she needed to purchase and even said "Where is everyone? I've got to get going." Don't get me wrong, we understand the huge burdens and hardships shelters and rescues of all kinds face each day just to operate. But Mom and her boss looked around and decided enough is enough. During the time they visited every room with animals they only saw one worker the WHOLE TIME and he didn't even acknowledge them. Her boss even commented on the fact that there was no one, in respect to workers, around if anyone had a question or was interested in seeing a dog or cat. Not a great way to get them adopted if you ask me. Then Mom stands there and waits, it is obvious she wants to buy something, and she can't even get someone to take her money!! They only have ONE person up front who knows what is going on trying to take care of everything and the only other person in sight that looks like they might have something to do with something, since it did appear she had a name badge on with her dress-cas office clothing, is standing in the door way of an office yip-yapping and laughing her head off.

Bottom line, momma was going to buy me that collar but she couldn't wait any longer either. She had a meeting she had to get to. So she put it down and walked out without it and they lost out on making some money. Worst of all Mom had to leave with a "bad taste in her mouth". Admittedly she had heard some things about our local HS that she did not like but she has always looked for the best, and wanted to draw her own conclusions. Yesterday was her first visit, and her first immpression is not the best.

After she got done with her meeting she went to her favorite pet store, Wipe Your Pawz on the west-side, and found the exact same collar, and yes, at the same price, and bought it from them and plus some other thing of course.

On a lighter note.......
As I mentioned before they did have many empty cages, I am told this is good, very good, because animals stay as long as they have room at the shelter, so intake for at least right now is low and hopefully adoption is high(?), there anyways. If you are looking for a new friend Mom says there are still many there that would love to do everything they can to make you happy. Many young dogs that stupid "owners", probably not responsible enough to take care of themselves, have surrendered because they "weren't prepared for how big they would get" (a whole whopping 40 pounds) or "I didn't know so much would be needed of me for house training," and my favorite, "we are moving" or "travel to much and dog doesn't travel well". PLEEAAASE if you are thinking, and have thought it over well, of adding a fur baby to your home, go check them out. I am sure one will steal your heart.

☺☺A playful kitty or a laid back Tom may be just what you need, they have every size, color, and age for you to choose!☺☺

I hope you posted this comment on the HS website as well. Busy or not they should always have someone available to service their customers and potential adopters.

I had to wait 2 1/2 hours to adopt Minnie. I went when it was supposedly a slow time too. Everyone there was upset. They had two people working that day. Apparently, it is just that way. I've gone up there many times to buy toys or something and walked out empty-handed because no one was available to help. They won't let volunteers take money. One of them told me that before. I think if someone has volunteered with them for quite some time, they should train them and let them at least sell the items in the lobby. They do lose money because of that.

That is a sad thing to hear. My mommy had a pretty positive experience there, and that is where I came from. There were about 2-3 people helping when mommy went, but we still had to wait awhile to get me adopted. It's too bad volunteers can't ring people up. Maybe if enough people write in and complain they will change policy.

My mama was intersted in being a volunterr for HSI in February. She was told they were "revamping" their volunteer program. Each time she checked back, they weren't taking any volunteer applications. Hmmmm. . .it seems, now, like they are low on volunteers. Coincidence? They do say on their website they're ready to accept volunteers, but mama thinks she might help ARPO insted. Mama has heard some not too positive thinns about HSI.Hmmmm. . .it seems, now, like they are low on volunteers. Coincidence?

Hi pals - and Hi to my Yogi and I LOVE you!!! My Mommy says that ARPO is a great group and she is working with a friends at work on a fundraiser for them right now - selling Yankee Candles and other neat things to raise money to help the foster homes and make sure the homeless animals get good care. ARPO is a good place and they need volunteers. Maybe a whole bunch of us should go to HSI and raise a ruckus!! :) We want all our homeless friends to find new forever families! xoxo Fifi
