Pit Bull Breeding Restrictions

Nadji on Breeds - Thu, August 30 2007

Maybe it's time to do something but I'm not sure what. Last night a couple of ladies from FIDO came to my house to pick up some dog kennel panels & ex-pens I donated. The one lady had a yr. old pit bull w/ her that had been taken from the owner. He's now in jail. Yes!!! When this dog was rescued the injuries were so bad it should not have lived but she did. It was being used as pit bull bait for older dogs. Probably fighters. Most of her injuries have healed except for one on the neck. She has scars ALL OVER her body. She is absolutely the sweetest dog & amazingly she loves other dogs. She is totally submissive no matter what the dogs reaction to her. It would be a shame to limit breeding of dogs but how else can we stop what these people are doing to this breed. What about controlled breeding by reputable people? They would also have to keep tabs on their puppies after they're sold & make sure there's no cruelty going on. I know it's a lot more complicated than that but you get the drift.

That is a fablous idea!! Limit breeding and track all pits. Poor thing how horrible to have to go through. I have a foster pitty and he is amazing!! They are such sweet loving dogs, but how do you stop ppl from using them for their own entertainment is a really hard question. We created them we should not destroy them because of what we have done. It makes my heart bleed.

I know what you mean, I am so torn on the situation. I have met some very sweet pitbulls and I think it is wrong to judge a book by it's cover, so to speak. But I am going to be honest, if I am walking my dogs and I see a pitbull out with their owner, I might not let my dogs go right up and sniff and say hello. I feel awful to have said that, but I have just heard (and seen) so many bad episodes. In the case of this dog, bless her heart. I am glad she is safe and in a loving home now. I just hate to hear about these things.

Oh, how I wish something like this would become a law and one that is enforced! What worries me is that even though these poor dogs are out of the bad situations, can they be trusted? I want to think so but I just don't know. Will something "set them off", or remind them of the past and go nuts? Sad to say, I don't think I could rescue a Pit even though my heart bleed for them all. I've always thought I could take one in, but that's because I want to help. I think my part will be helping to educate people about this breed. I'm not afraid of them at all, I just don't think I could bring one into my home....

i support EDUCATING the public on S/N, but, to single out any one breed, be it APBT's, the GSD...whatever...well, that is BSL, no matter how you cut it.when you single out ANY breed, for ANYTHING...THAT is BSL (breed specific legislation). it also would infringe on the rights of us, as pet owners. BSL is a FINE LINE, and i DO support S/N of MOST APBT's...any one i'd ever have WOULD be, unless i showed them, or did weight pull, but you just can't go around telling people that JUST because they own the current "popular with the thug" or "socially unacceptable" breed, that they are required to get it S/N...or any surgical procedure. it is my right to have my pet S/N.(or NOT to, or to have my dog's ears cropped, dewclaws removed, tail docked, etc. would it be right to MAKE people do this to their pets, even if they don't want to?) i think there are much better things to spend one's energy on, like things that are currently going on, with IPC, and IACC,as was demonstrated last thursday at the viewing of the anti-dogfighting video release, but to seek a law on MAKING people S/N JUST this breed is nuts, IMO, and could never be enforced, just like most any BSL.

Poor girl! I hope she finds a wonderful home. I wish there was a good answer to this problem. I would like to euthanize the people who do these things! Unfortunately, for some reason, society thinks they're worth keeping around. Whatever! I say take out the trash. If we phased out pits, those low-life scumbags would pick another breed. I would not breed pit bulls because I would be too afraid some A-hole would get a hold of one of my pups. I would hate to see the breed phased out though. They really are wonderful dogs. I never realized just how loving they are until I got Minnie. There are a couple pits up at the FACE clinic where I volunteer, and they're loving dogs too. Minnie wants to be with me all the time. She follows me while I clean, cuddles up to me when we sleep, lays on my lap while we watch TV. (Lucky for me she's only 40 lbs!) :)
