Fair??

Colton on My Blog - Fri, August 24 2007

Do we furkids understand the concept of "fair"? Mom is always telling dad that it's not fair that ones of us get something and the others don't. Like a few weeks ago my oldest sister needed to take some antibiotics and mom gave them to her by putting it in peanut butter. Well, she figured if Foz got some peanut butter, then the rest of us should get some. Also, she gets mad at dad when he pets one or two of us, then not the rest.(there are 5 in our pack) She says that it's not fair that only a couple of us get his lovins' and the rest don't. (It's not that he doesn't pet all of us, its just that we can never seem to get enough) Dad is always telling mom, we don't understand the concept of "fair", but mom always argue that we do. We understand that someone in the pack is getting something we aren't, right? What are you thoughts on this?

Well, at least in the wolf world, fair is a concept that is pretty strictly human. There are always lower ranking wolves who don't get the pick of the food, or don't get to mate, or get groomed by the others as much, etc. Somebody has to be on the bottom of the pack. Ones who don't accept their status can try to advance their rank by fighting for it (usually nothing very serious)and they either advance or not. That's just the way it is. Since dogs are domesticated we interject our human values into the equation. I usually give my dogs equal treatment, but I don't go out of my way to do so, and if somebody gets something and somebody else doesn't, they get over it pretty quickly. Dogs live in the moment. They don't carry around lingering resentments about life being unfair.

Dogs are so much smarter than humans. :) But my Mommy says this - YOU KNOW WHAT? THE FAIR'S IN AUGUST AND YOU HAVE TO PAY TO GET IN!!!
