The benefit to going to a good breeder is that you have a good idea of how the dog will turn out in terms of temp, personality, health, etc. I don't think $750 is a bad price (although I have NO idea how much a "pet" doxie is). Is she spayed? I spay/neuter all pets prior to adoption (it's included in the price) into pet homes--it's the least I can do to ensure that the dogs won't be used in an accidental breeding--I'm not very trusting of spay/neuter contracts--which I'm assuming that this girl will be sold on? There are plenty of doxies that come into shelter--so if you aren't concerned about the quality of dog you will get from this breeder, then adopt one when it becomes available. And, since you aren't in a hurry for another dog, then you may as well just wait until one appears in a shelter--that's what I would do!
hmmm...$750 is a lot to spend, especially if she's "pet" quality. I think if you're asking for second opinions, then it's not in your heart to purchase this puppy. Keep your eyes peeled on Petfinder or www.drna.org for your sister's perfect Dachshund that needs a home. Besides, I'm not sure how much more $$ is involved in owning a long-haired, with grooming and all.
Please, please adopt rather than buy. DRNA is located here in Indiana as is Almost Home Dachshund Rescue. There are so many dogs needing good homes. I don't doubt that your friend is a good breeder but why pay $750 for a pet quality puppy when you can rescue the same quality puppy for much less? Dachshunds do have issues-hard to housetrain, bossy, feisty, diggers, barkers, etc. Many people just see how cute we are and want one and aren't prepared to put up with all our issues. That's why so many of us end up in rescue. Check out my brothers. They are both long hair tweenies that came from rescue. It is possible to get the exact kind of doxie you want through rescue. Puppies are harder to come by although Almost Home frequently has some. The closest rescuer with that group is in Fort Wayne and she's a sweetie! What will happen to this pup if you don't buy her? She won't be euthanized or anything-she'll just go to another home. Unfortunately shelter doxies aren't as lucky. Mom would be happy to help you find a rescue doxie. I'll even let you have one of my brothers on a trial run(I wish they were that easy to get rid of). I don't think the number of animals is an issue. Money obviously is. Added vet bills and the purchase price are significant. Would her price include spaying? If you rescue, that is usually included in their fee. Good luck. I would say if you really want a doxie, the one that needs you most will find you. That's usually what happens around here. Mom really wants a piebald doxie but figures one will probably show up that really needs us and we'll have to scoot over to make room for him or her.
You are all so smart!! I just talked to the breeder and the puppy is $550, not $750, and she isn't spayed, but I will need to do that. I would really like to get a dog that just "falls into my lap". They just happen, you know what I mean. I AM having second thoughts about getting her mainly because I don't have 100% support from my hubby. Thank you ALL for your support and advice about this. She really is a precious puppy with a very laid-back temperment. I still don't know wha tthe outcome will be but I will remember everything you all said. I'll keep you posted!
