Pitt bull question

Cookie on Breeds - Thu, August 09 2007

When we were in PA visiting grams, granpa and Uncle B, mom was talking to her brother about how she would have no problem adopting a pit bull. (I WOULD...2 dogs are enough!) Here's mom's question... Her bro said that there is "something" in their brains that get triggerd and causes an automatic attack response. Mom said that was ridiculous, but he was insistent. Honestly, he knows nothing about the breed and mom wants the facts to set him straight. We don't need anymore pit bull rumors!!! So all of you Pit experts, now is your time to share your knowledge.

Mom here: I used to have a Doberman that did a strange thing similar to what you're describing. He never attacked anyone but occasionally awake or asleep, he would have like a fit of aggression. Once my neighbor came over and the Dobie went to sit next to her while she was standing talking to me. She was rubbing on his head while she spoke to me and suddenly he had this fit of snarling & snapping like he was going to bite her and then it was over as quickly as it started and he wanted her to continue petting him. Scared us both to death because we didn't know what caused it. He would occasionally do this in his sleep too. Anyone ever hear of this?

That's a GREAT site, thanks Mikey!! Mom forwarded it to her brother. Nadji, go to this site and read about this same question. It talks about Dobermans.

nadjii, that sounds like rage syndrome.i've seen lots of cockers and springers with that, but dobes can be prone to it too. it is actually a seizure disorder.i have never seen or heard of an APBT having this, though.

Nadji's mom's Doberman probably had a seizure disorder. They can manifest themselves in many ways besides the traditional falling down and jerking type. Poor pit bulls--now this new myth!

I've heard the same thing about the automatic attacks. It's been so long ago since I first heard it that I can't remember where I got that info. Too bad there's not been any evidence to contradict that nasty rumor- although I have not looked at the site that Mikey offered us yet...maybe that has the facts! Let's hope so!

My mom used to work at FACE where a lot of pitbulls were dumped (unfortunately...) and they are the same as all dogs in that, THEY ARE ALL DIFFERENT!!! Some like other dogs, some did not, some like CERTAIN other dogs, some loved kitties. Mom remembers her favorite dog, her name is Dot. She was probably the biggest dog there, and there were some dogs she did not get along with, but put her in a room with a cat and she was in LOVE! She let them chase her tail and shard a water dish with them. It was really something. Your mom is right though, they aren't all mean. If your mom does decide to adopt a pit, I would just advise her to try a home visit with you and your doggy siblings before making any final decisions. I hope you do get one though because there are plenty that need good homes! Good luck!

My cousin had a springer with rage and he actually attacked her daughter. It was really unfortunate (about 10 years ago)--he was so sweet otherwise. That would be my guess about the doberman OR some other kind of seizure disorder, which as you have said, can manifest itself in a multitude of ways.

there is NOTHING in their brains except smarts! They were bred for fighting other dogs back in the early years but pits do not "automatically attack" things. It is their level of excitement that triggers this response. please feel free to visit casadeltoro.org for more info on pit bulls. thanks!

THe original purpose of the American Pit bull Terrier, was Bull baiting, they used them to bring and control other huge animals for the butchers, it was later that they used them for ratting and dog fighting, they do not have locking jaws, no special enzime, brains wont explode. There are so many myths.
However, as kelly pointed out there is a wonderful link you can go to.
