Dad called me an 'animal'

Bella on My Blog - Wed, August 08 2007

He really did, and I don't think it was in a nice way... He was talking to mom on the phone, and they were talking about how we are going up to see him tomorrow and Friday. Well Friday mom and I are gonna hang out at his mom's store, where they sell some pet supplies and garden decoration stuff.

I've been there before, and it's really fun cuz I get lots of attention from people that come in. And I was real excited about going Friday, until dad said they have to figure a way to keep me behind the counter, where I can't see people! He said:

"No offense or anything, but it's not very professional to have an animal running around the store."

That's exactly what he said!! He didn't say 'Bella' or even 'a dog' which would have made mom feel a little better. He just called me an animal like he doesn't even care!

So mom is a little upset about it, because he did say it like he doesn't even like me much, even though I like him a lot. (he does bring me stuff after all)

Mom knows this could be a problem. It's gonna be less professional to have me barking and crying when I can hear people, but not see them! I have to at least be able to SEE them!

She should have said something while she was still on the phone with him. But she didn't, and now he's asleep. I guess we're just gonna have to see what happens. We'll see how long we end up staying and visiting if he's gonna lock me up!!

Boys just don't have that brain-to-mouth filter that girls have.

I don't think there is anything wrong with Bella running around the store. If I was a patron I would love to see that and would come back more often to buy things if I knew I would be greeted by such a beautiful pup.

I agree! Lol. 95% of the people that saw me in there before stopped and petted me and said how cute I was. We like to go to a certain pet store near mom's work, cuz we always know there will be a boston terrier in there to say hi to us!

There used to be a ginormous Great Dane puppy that greeted us all the time when we used to shop at the McNamara Nursery at 73rd and Michigan Rd! We loved to go see how much he'd grown each time!

I don't get it....if they sell pet supplies, why would it be so unprofessional to have a pet there? And why would he bring you stuff if he doesn't like you? Your dad is very confusing.

Do you think his mom told him this? Maybe she's the one that doesn't want you in the store and he's grouchy because he doesn't know how to tell your mom. Men are horrible when it comes to things like that! (OK, the ones I know are.) I personally like to see dogs in stores. I will go into a store with a dog way more often, just to see the dog! I don't like "professional". I like down-to-earth mom-and-pop shops where I can have a nice conversation with the owner while I'm shopping. I would rather pay a few extra dollars for a nice shopping experience than to go to Wal-Mart and come out flustered and frustrated! People worry too much about that professional image. I work in an office, and I am so done with "professional"!

I agree with Bev & her Mom. It's so neat to go into a store where there's a "store dog or cat". Maybe your Mom will talk to your Dad about it later? Anyway, hope you can have a good time.

We go to stores with pets in them just to see them!!! I think it makes the atmosphere so much more friendly, you want to hang around and look more!! Boys........

There's a western store in OK that we always go to when we're out there just to see the French Bulldog that is usually there. Foot Solutions in Castleton has a Golden that greets everyone and brings back repeat customers. People LOVE pets in stores.

Well, I guess we're just gonna have to see how it goes. Mom thinks if she holds my leash, especially when someone comes in it'll be ok. They had a problem when I was little, I got so excited to see people, but they didn't always see me, and I almost tripped a couple people!

I'll have my paws crossed that all will go well for you! You're such a cutie, Bella, that it's hard to imagine anyone not wanting to see you. Good luck!

We're sorry if what your dad said hurted your feelings. You have to remember, they are only human. They don't know any better.
