scaredy cat

mitzi on Breeds - Sun, August 05 2007

are all chihuahuas nervous and scared alot. Mitzi is when a fly gets in the house, she hides behind the couch, shakes all over, and pants hard. I'm afraid she will have a heart attack

My human mommy grew up with two chihauhuas. They are nervous, but this is standard. They're so much smaller than everything else around them. They're naturally fearful. The younger of the two of Mom's puppies grew up in the family business, and she was less scared, probably because she was around people all the time. You might try socializing Mitzi with other dogs and people until she gains more confidence and gets used to her size.

No Mitzi, not all chihuahuas are nervous and scared. Some has to do with the lineage of the dog and some has to do with socialization as a youngster. Babying the dog as a puppy often creates a timid dog--maybe very sweet, but very unsure of new things. Especially when people carry the puppies around in little bags--this is one of the worst things (ahhh Paris Hilton) you can do with a baby chi. Once the dog is older and has learned to approach people on leash, walk on leash, get used to all kinds of feet around them...then you can bag them! LOL! You can also have the other effect of babying, which is an evil little devil dog! LOL...you see those chi's on the dog wisperer. Chi's are dogs, just as any other dog, and creating the most sound dog in temerament takes extra work and good socialization. I know from experience. Stevie was a sweet and reserved little puppy (her breeder warned me that she was going to be difficult to show). I took her to puppy class, made her walk on leash, took her to Broadripple, people's houses, etc every chance I got. Guess what? At 7 months of so, she did a complete turn around. Her breeder was so impressed! She's a sweet heart, but she's not the crazy jumpy terrier chi that some of them are. It was important for me to have a friendly, outgoing chi more than anything else and that's why I chose her breeder, who is known for healthy dogs with excellent temprements. If Mitzi is younger, you still might be able to get her out more...I bet she is just like Stevie used to be when she was younger...very sweet, but shy at the same time. Never mean or snappy...just unsure. Mitzi it totally adorable. Maybe take her to a dog class that has little dogs so that she won't be overwhelmed?? Stevie, in dog class, for the 1st few sessions hid behind the chairs. The instructor had to tell people to just ignore her when she did that because it's everyone's natural instint to go an rescue the scared little dog....but you just have to resist and let them fend for themselves (of course making sure they dont' get hurt). I love little chi's--all of them. It's so easy to baby them, but not doing it creates a better dog in the long run! I bet Stevie and Mitzi would get along well!
