hi jenn, i will try to answer a few questions that i can. i'm a groomer and i've groomed a few cockers that have had that surgery. your dog is young, so i would not be surprised it he does gain some hearing. older dogs tend to have had the damage done for so long, it doesn't as likely come back.(often because of poor nutrition, what food are you feeding him?) as far as the behavior....is he aggressive or nasty now? because i have seen that in dogs BEFORE the surgery was done. years ago, i groomed the meanest cocker, and the owners could not even get him out of the truck to bring him in. the vet that i worked for at the time had to go out and lasso him, and then he had to be sedated for grooming. poor guy. anyhow, after many years of horrible ear problems, they did this surgery. while the dog still had an attitude, it was NOTHING like before. i could actually get a muzzle on him, then groom him without any drugs. so, yes, i will say that dog must have felt a lot better, as shown by his behavior after the surgery. i've seen a few that were pretty nice before the surgery, and still as nice after, but you could just TELL they felt better, as they seemed happier. all in all, i can't say i've seen any bad effect, just from the spaniels i've seen have this done.as far as the recovery, you might want to ask your vet on that. are you having it done by your own vet, or a specialist? i know that there are some awesome specialists in anderson, dr. lee being my favorite, not sure if he (or his associates) do this surgery, but you might check. that is who my vet refers all their specialty surgeries to. her own dog just had ACL surgery done there, so that tells you what other vets think of them. anyhow, best of luck, and hope i was able to answer your questions somewhat. ;o)
