Amputation: Not the end!

Truman on Health - Mon, May 14 2007

Anyone out there have a dog who's gone through or going through a limb amputation? I just adopted a lab rescue, yellow male who had his front left leg amputated just about three weeks ago.

It's AMAZING how well he's doing! He runs faster than I do and doesn't even seem to know that he's missing a leg. He was a little shakey at times the first week -but everyday he improves.

Just curious if anyone else has gone through this and also wanted to offer hope to anyone out there who's facing it.

Michael,
You really need to talk to my fellow LOLIN rescue volunteer Pam. Her dog Henry is also a 3 legged guy. Pam will be at the Putt For Mutts Golf Tournament on July 21. If you have nothing to do that day, be sure to stop in at the Martinsville Golf Club and say hello.

Hi Truman! This is Bailey -- I'm a 4-1/2 year old beagle whose Mom tells me stories about her most favorite dog ever, Sadie. She was a purebred German shepherd who was diagnosed with bone cancer when Mom was a senior in college (1998/99). Sadie and Mom were like sisters, and Mom was devastated when they found out Sadie had cancer and would have to go through an amputation on her front left leg, radiation, and chemo. But Mom (and her sister and parents) were all astonished by how fast Sadie recovered and got back to her old self! I never met Sadie, but Mom says that just a few days after the amputation she was able to run pretty fast again. (Her favorite game was playing fetch with squeaky balls, although it seems like she very rarely actually brought the balls back to her people.) It was later, when the cancer started to come back, that Sadie started to lose her energy. But she never, ever lost her wonderful, loving personality. Truman, please keep in touch and let me know how you're doing. And BTW, I'd race you any day!! (I'm a pretty little dog, so you'd probably win. But it would still be fun.)

Wow you are so lucky to have found such a cool daddybud! Sometimes these humans out there forget what it is to feel really alive, perfect body or not.
Keep him hoppin' Truman!
Talk to you later,
Kali (and Sydney too!)

I remember seeing a piece on the news a few years ago about a lab that lost two legs on one side due to a farming accident. I was amazed to see the footage showing the animal running at near full speed on only it's right legs. Truly amazing stuff... I'm sure the video is on the net somewhere.

Here's a video of a dog that gets around fine ...

My dog buddy, Wilbur lost his back leg in an accident. He's doing great. He runs and plays just like any other dog. I don't get to see him too often because he lives way up North but when we do, we have lots of fun.

I only have 3 legs too! I was adopted about 2 weeks ago and I lost my leg about 5 weeks ago. Mine is a back leg so I just use my other back leg like a pogo stick to get around. I can still run really fast too. I was a little scared of stairs at first (I am just a little dog so stairs are pretty big) but now I'm doing just fine! I think the missing leg makes me more aerodynamic.
