Oh Niobi, I hope you'll be OK. It's funny you peed in the vet's sink!! That will show him! My mom is the same as your mom. No matter the cost, she is going to take care of us. She has this clip from a magazine with a chocolate lab puppy. It says "You promised to take care of me. I don't understand the if I can afford it part." She says that puts it into perspective for her. Butch had two surgeries on his leg this spring for a cancer tumor. I've had allergy testing and am on shots. Some of mom's friends and family think she is crazy to spend money on us like she does, but she says that is her responsibility to us for all the love we give her. We'll be praying for you to get better without that surgery though because it's scary for our moms when we have surgery. They worry, you know!
I'm 4, too and I'm on a prescription diet for crystals in my urine. I'll be on it the rest of my life, too. It's not so bad! My other kitty siblings eat it too since I have to and they like it. I'll bet with a new food you'll get better. We'll pray that this works. You have a sweet mom and it would be worth having surgery (if you need it), you're young and healthy and darn it, we're worth it!
I'm on prescription dog food because my liver is funky and causes me to make crystals in my urine. I also take a human drug that mom gets from the Kroger pharmacy (it's funny when she has to get a refill for Maggie K-9!)
Like Oreo says, the food's not that bad!
We'll be crossing our paws for you. Keep us posted.
If the surgery is too much to pay at once, ask the vet about payments. Vets tend to be nice folks who are willing to work with people so that they can afford to help their pets when it comes to expensive surgeries. Which prescription food are you getting? Is it Hills Prescription or Royal Canin? Those are the two brands I'm most familiar with and I've heard several success stories from folks who work with various rescues that have cats that have to eat the special food.
We are all sending good juju and crossed paws that the new food and antibiotics will help. My mom once had a cat who got a bad blockage during the snowstorm of 1978; mom was at work at a hospital, snowed in, but caught a ride with an ambulance that dropped her off at the end of her street. She took a pediatric feeding tube and some Thorazine to sedate her cat, and catheterized him at home on the kitchen counter. If she had not he would have died from uremic poisoning, because none of the vets could get in to their offices even if she had been able to get the cat there. He survived and mom caught another ride back so she could work 3 days straight. We companions are grateful for the lengths humans are willing to go to save us and make our lives better. We are thinking about you, Niobi.
Oh, so sorry to hear about that! I know some cats are prone to that...that's why they make food with UTI health ingredients. You may look into UltraOil and see if that might be a good supplement...For The Love of Dogs carries it. My dogs love it and it has many "good for them" ingredients...heres a link

sending good thoughts your way!! is this surgery the one where they make the boy cat's, uh, "pee-hole" very large, so more like a female cat, so they can pass out any crystals? if so, i say get it done, because after many cathedarizations, the muscles around your cat's penis will lose their strength, and he will be dripping urine a lot, and also the problem will come back, and he will once again be plugged. i had a cat that had that surgery back in 96, poor fella had had UTI and blockage issues for several years (he was around 10 at the time)and once he healed after the surgery, he NEVER had another bladder issue ever again!he passed away at the age of 15, and i would do it again if i had to. it cost upwards of $1000, and that was the mid-nineties.worth every penny to me. the surgery was done by dr. lee in anderson, and i highly recommend him. unless your vet is a specialist in this field, don't have him do this, rather, pay the $$ for a specialist to do it. also, i would get your cat on canned food as the main food, not dry. (unless you are going to try raw diet). cats do not drink enough water, and then they eat dry food, and they become dehydrated, etc, and then get those urinary issues. i hope he does ok, please keep us updated.
