Bad News from the Vet

Niobi on Health - Tue, July 24 2007

I went to the vet last night because I have yet another UTI. Unfortunately, it was 5th one in 2 years and my 3rd in the last 6 months. All of my tests had always come back inconclusive...but last night when the vet expressed my bladder a whole bunch of stones popped out.

So now I have to be on prescription diet for the rest of my life...which hopefully won't be that bad (except I'm really going to miss eating Roman's dry dog food) and I might need surgery. (As a true sign of my character, after the vet mentioned this, I jumped onto his medicine counter and peed in his sink:))

The vet offered mom to leave me with him last night and have me cut open in the morning...or to wait and see if my problem clears up with the new food and antibiotics. Mom decided to wait and see. The surgery is very expensive, not without its own risks, and I have always been a hardy kitty and am no stranger to overcoming a bleak diagnosis...even when the odds are truly against me.....but just the same...if I stop urinating mom has 24 hours to get me help before it is too late.

Dad thinks that the surgery is so expensive that if it comes to that then mom and dad should let me go...but mom explained that she doesn't believe that it is her choice to let me die. First of all, I am very young (not quite 4) and secondly, paying for the surgery is as much about saving my life as it is about saving her from the guilt of having traded the life of one of God's creatures...a creature that loves and trusts her...for money. She explained to dad that she will ALWAYS feel this way about us (the animals) and that he should be aware of that fact...so he said ok. He understands, and I will get the surgury if I need it...because mom needs it too.

Still, I am scared. Please send me good thoughts:)

Oh, we hope the new food helps you, but you have a wonderful mama who loves you very much!

Oh Niobi, I hope you'll be OK. It's funny you peed in the vet's sink!! That will show him! My mom is the same as your mom. No matter the cost, she is going to take care of us. She has this clip from a magazine with a chocolate lab puppy. It says "You promised to take care of me. I don't understand the if I can afford it part." She says that puts it into perspective for her. Butch had two surgeries on his leg this spring for a cancer tumor. I've had allergy testing and am on shots. Some of mom's friends and family think she is crazy to spend money on us like she does, but she says that is her responsibility to us for all the love we give her. We'll be praying for you to get better without that surgery though because it's scary for our moms when we have surgery. They worry, you know!

I'm 4, too and I'm on a prescription diet for crystals in my urine. I'll be on it the rest of my life, too. It's not so bad! My other kitty siblings eat it too since I have to and they like it. I'll bet with a new food you'll get better. We'll pray that this works. You have a sweet mom and it would be worth having surgery (if you need it), you're young and healthy and darn it, we're worth it!

I'm on prescription dog food because my liver is funky and causes me to make crystals in my urine. I also take a human drug that mom gets from the Kroger pharmacy (it's funny when she has to get a refill for Maggie K-9!)

Like Oreo says, the food's not that bad!

We'll be crossing our paws for you. Keep us posted.

If the surgery is too much to pay at once, ask the vet about payments. Vets tend to be nice folks who are willing to work with people so that they can afford to help their pets when it comes to expensive surgeries. Which prescription food are you getting? Is it Hills Prescription or Royal Canin? Those are the two brands I'm most familiar with and I've heard several success stories from folks who work with various rescues that have cats that have to eat the special food.

We are all sending good juju and crossed paws that the new food and antibiotics will help. My mom once had a cat who got a bad blockage during the snowstorm of 1978; mom was at work at a hospital, snowed in, but caught a ride with an ambulance that dropped her off at the end of her street. She took a pediatric feeding tube and some Thorazine to sedate her cat, and catheterized him at home on the kitchen counter. If she had not he would have died from uremic poisoning, because none of the vets could get in to their offices even if she had been able to get the cat there. He survived and mom caught another ride back so she could work 3 days straight. We companions are grateful for the lengths humans are willing to go to save us and make our lives better. We are thinking about you, Niobi.

Oh, so sorry to hear about that! I know some cats are prone to that...that's why they make food with UTI health ingredients. You may look into UltraOil and see if that might be a good supplement...For The Love of Dogs carries it. My dogs love it and it has many "good for them" ingredients...heres a link

sending good thoughts your way!! is this surgery the one where they make the boy cat's, uh, "pee-hole" very large, so more like a female cat, so they can pass out any crystals? if so, i say get it done, because after many cathedarizations, the muscles around your cat's penis will lose their strength, and he will be dripping urine a lot, and also the problem will come back, and he will once again be plugged. i had a cat that had that surgery back in 96, poor fella had had UTI and blockage issues for several years (he was around 10 at the time)and once he healed after the surgery, he NEVER had another bladder issue ever again!he passed away at the age of 15, and i would do it again if i had to. it cost upwards of $1000, and that was the mid-nineties.worth every penny to me. the surgery was done by dr. lee in anderson, and i highly recommend him. unless your vet is a specialist in this field, don't have him do this, rather, pay the $$ for a specialist to do it. also, i would get your cat on canned food as the main food, not dry. (unless you are going to try raw diet). cats do not drink enough water, and then they eat dry food, and they become dehydrated, etc, and then get those urinary issues. i hope he does ok, please keep us updated.

Speedy and Stuart are right. Be very very careful about the dry food. If you decided against a raw diet please at least do canned. Please, please do some research though. Contact me and I can give you links to hundreds of websites about UTI's, different pet foods, etc.
