Will RAW FEEDING Help?

Niobi on Health - Sat, July 21 2007

So we know that I am prone to UTIs and now have my 3rd one in 6 months. Mom and Dad are DESPERATE for me to remain healthy (with Mom in school and Dad being a teacher we're not exactly rolling in cash and each UTI is at least $100 a pop and often more). We've already had a couple urinalysises and they have both come back inconclusive.

So Mom is thinking of switching me over to a raw feed diet. Does anyone out there have reason to believe that this will help? Please share your experiences!!!

Also...for those of you doing raw feed....how much does it typically cost per month?

there are several raw feeders here, one i can think of is jessie, he's a Shetland Sheepdog (sheltie)they have a cat that was very sick with diabetes, and once they switched to raw, i believe it may have reversed it. you can contact him here by going up to the top right, and put in breed, and then it will give you a bunch of pics. he's a blue merle sheltie. good luck!

Wow, how fortuitous. I have been travelling a lot lately and very very busy and have not had a chance to get on the site lately. Today is the first time in a couple weeks. Glad I saw this post.
Yes Jesse has 3 cat siblings. "Bebes" got diabetes 5 years ago and raw feeding saved her life. "Rocky" used to have urninary tract infections about twice a year until we started raw feeding. Since then he has had only one in the last 5 years...and that appeared to be casued by stress as we had just gotten Jesse and it really freaked Rocky out and he was very very depressed and then got a UTI. So we attribute that one to stress not diet.
Water is very very important for cats. When cats eat kibble they literally are in a chronic state of dehydration as no matter how much they drink the kibble is absorbing the water. So they have to drink and drink and drink to get enough water to digest the kibble. But to avoid UTI's they need to keep the urine very diluted. When eating kibble all the moisture they are getting is going towards helping them digest their food so the body is not using it to "flush" out the urine. So the urine becomes very concentrated causing infections. Raw feeding is naturally very high in moisture which eliminates that problem. I am not a scientist so I probably did not explain it very well...all I know is raw feeding solved the UTI problems with Rocky. Go to www.mypetcarnivore.com because they have a ton of health related articles there. Scroll down to the links and look at the one called "is my cat a carnivore". It talks about the hydration issue in that one. Also go to the "Health Articles" and look at the one called "feline health problems associated with dry food". It talks about the kidney and bladder issues there. Also you may want to call or email Sue at My Pet Carnivore because she is very knowlegable and loves to help pets.
As far as the cost goes it works out for us to be about 50-70 cents per day per cat. That depends on what type of food you go with, how big the cat is, etc. etc. Might be a little more expensive than some processed foods but you more than make up for it in less trips to the vet for UTI's, dental cleaning, etc. etc.
Sorry to be so wordy, but I hope that helps. And please please keep us posted on how things are going for Niobi. UTI's can be deadly so I will be thinking about him. Feel free to contact me if you want to talk more about anything.
And by the way that photo of him in the sink is a real hoot!

Thank you Speedy and Stuart (I imagine you sent Jesse to my post!). And Thank You Jesse! I am finally going to get to go to the vet this afternoon (it's no fun when Mom figures out you're sick after the Drs. office closes for the weekend!) and Mom is going to ask the vet's opinion on the situation....but I think we're going to give raw feeding a try no matter what the vet says. Thanks again, we'll keep you posted!! ....And we welcome anyone else to chime in on this post as well! We would love to hear more stories!

Were you prone to UTI's before your most recent 3? Have your mom ask if there's a urine culture type test the vet could do--yes, it means more $$. But with 3 UTIs in just 6mo, I'm wondering if the antibiotics you've been on weren't fully working. Most vets use a broad-spectrum antibiotic, but in some cases a bacteria-specific one is needed because the other one isn't fully killing all the bad bacteria like it should. Especially if the frequent UTI issue is recent (past 6mo vs whole life). Tends to say the diet isn't fully to blame.

This may be a silly question but could you be extremely sensitive to the brand of cat litter that your using? A friend of our family's cat turned out to be allergic to the cat litter that they were using. thus making her not want to use the litterbox and holding it for hours longer than she should have causing her infections.
