Invisible Fences

Boss on Behavior - Wed, July 18 2007

My friend Sweetie loves to run, especially away from home. Over the last few months she has done this a number of times. She recently ran through her invisible fence. We thought she was gone for good. Luckily she got tired and went to someone's house late in the night and they returned her the next morning.

We are looking for suggestions on why she is bolting like this and how to keep her in. Thanks.

I agree with Daisy; some dogs are just made to run. I know of a Border Collie that stays behind it's invisible fence no matter how frantic it gets but my friend's dog is a runner & there's no way to keep her home. She's not a very big mixed breed but her heart is in wandering.

I love to run too. Fortunatly, I live in a heavily wooded area with lots of space so I can run around and not get out on the main street. When my mom calls me, I head for home. Usually she has water and a biscuit ready for me. I'm also a sucker for peanut butter. Sometimes, if I don't come home right away, mom stands out in the front yard with a tablespoon of peanutbutter. Once I smell that, I'm on my way! Mom knows how to get me home. When I get tired, I sit on my own front porch and watch the world go by. I'm a lucky dog.
