(Fish oil i)

Sr. Gunner First Class on Health - Tue, July 10 2007

(Fish oil is good for dogs – and cats! Veterinarians first used omega-3 fatty acids in the form of fish oil to treat canine allergies but now recommend it for a wide variety of conditions ranging from kidney disease to arthritis and high cholesterol. Adding fish oil to your dog's food provides anti-inflammatory effects and can help relieve itching due to atopic dermatitis, an allergy-related skin condition.)You can get fish oil supplements designed for companion animals from both Nordic Naturals and Animal Essentials (and, I'm sure, from other sources), but you also can use fish oil meant for humans as long as you choose the correct dosage. For example, Nordic Naturals recommends one capsule of its 1500 mg soft gel fish oil for large dogs weighing 20 pounds or more. Smaller animals should get smaller doses. If you use fish oil that is intended for humans, you can give larger dogs a capsule or two (depending on the dosage) and puncture a capsule to squeeze some of the contents into the food of smaller dogs or cats

Mom has a little to add: .... As with people taking fish oil, you want to be sure of it's source and testing. Many 'cheap' fish oils come from the liver of the fish. Think about that, the liver is essentially the body's filter, and can house many harmful toxins. So look for a bottle that says 'fish BODY oil.' Next it is important that the fish oil be tested. The best is in a FDA-registered lab, and that is found to be free of lead, mercury, and PCBs. Remember you get what you pay for, what's a couple dollars more? You don't buy the cheapest flea medicine you can find at your local flea market, so why buy cheap supplements?? GNC carries Fish Body Oils, that meet both guidelines above, in 1000 mg softgels. Also the DHA found in fish oils, which is an omega fatty acid, is good for brain and nerve development, and helps protect against related birth defects when taken by pregnant women. I don't know for sure, but it's probably similar for dogs. ...... Sorry, mom gets on her soapbox about supplements sometimes, she used to sell them! :)

My mom uses Ultra-oil skin & coat supplement from For Love of Dogs. It has Omega 6,3 and 9 with added vitamins. My coat is nice and shiney and my skin doesn't get dry and itchy.

We get daily fish pills here. I love them. No need to squeeze them on my food - hand them to me and I pop them open in my mouth. Tas-tee!

we gt ULTRA OIL, too. the cats, too! we've only been using it for about a week, now, but will give you an update after a few weeks on it. mikey has some dandruff, and me and jasper are kind of dry (from being out in the sun a lot, haha) so mom decided to give it a try. hey, if chris and rich (owners of for the love of dogs in irvington) will give this to their dogs, then we know it has to be great!!! :)
