Doggie cool down tips, did you know

Ally on Behavior - Thu, July 05 2007

These tips are from Caesar the dog trainer. I thgought they wer really helpful.

1. Dogs cool from the bottom up. Lay a wet towel under your dog instead of on top of her coat. Don't forget your dog's paws and stomach when spraying water. Try a wash rag soaked in cold water, ring it out then lay on your dogs tummy.

2. Keep him hydrated. Make sure your dog has access to water. If you're on the move, carry a portable bowl and bottle of water.

3. Different dogs have different needs. Darker coats absorb more heat than lighter coats, and overweight dogs dehydrate faster. Keep this in mind when taking your pack on a walk.

4. Never leave your dog in a parked car. A car retains heat, even in the shade. Add an overexcited dog to the equation, and dehydration can result. On long trips, keep the AC on or roll down the window, and make sure water is available. A car can heat up to over 100 in less then 5 minutes parked in the shade.

5. Be innovative. A wet towel, a water spritzer, a kiddie pool, a fan in front of a pan of ice: these are all great ways to help keep your dog cool.

6. Be vigilant! Watch for signs of dehydration. These include excessive drooling, lethargy, bloodshot eyes, and loss of skin elasticity. If you're concerned, get your dog into the shade or go inside, provide water, and contact your veterinarian.

This is a little embarrassing but I fainted once when I was young because I got too hot. It about scared my bean grandpa to death. He was watching me at the time and I got all 'cited and goofy and totally wore myself out. Before I know it, I fainted. Binx ran and got G-pa and he dumped cold water on me and I woke up. He was shaking so hard. He took me home and kept telling me how sorry he was for not noticing how hot I was. I was okay, but G-pa was really freaked out. --Mookie

My mama says that's the reason why we go to the bark park so late. She wants us to avoid the heat, especially because I play ball sooooo much and don't know when to stop! Thanks for the tips!

Mom always leaves the A/C on for me when she goes to work or class. And she also found these cool, hard plastic ice things at wal-mart that are shaped like flowers and a smiley face that she puts in my crate when she leaves or just leaves out on the floor with me when she's there. They are great for me because the plastic is thick and I can't hurt it, they keep me cool if I still get too warm, I get another toy to play with, and I get to lick all the condensation off the outside when they start to melt, I just LOVE condensation. Lol.
