a scary moment!!!

Jasper on Behavior - Sun, July 01 2007

WOW, i had a scary moment when i first got home from my trip!!! i was out front bringing my things in, and my mom said the neighbor's little dog was sticking her head through the gate. i looked, and just saw her face (she's a chihuahua/dachshund mix) sticking through the small space between the edge of the gate and the house. mom said she kept biting the edge of the wood, and i could hear her pulling on it, or something. i took mikey out to potty, walked back past there (it could not have been more than 2 minutes) and she had her whole head crammed out, up to her shoulder, and one leg, and she was STUCK!!! she's an old dog, too, and pretty chubby. there's no doubt in my mind that if i'd not seen her, she'd have further gotten stuck, and probably have suffocated. she was panting HEAVILY!! anyhow, i screamed for hubby, and he ran out and held her (so she would not panic any more, and not get any further, as we could NOT get her to fit back through) and luckily they were home, and came out and unlocked the door handle. she was really acting freaked out, and they were wondering what could have made her do that, as she NEVER had before!! then it dawned on me, people were just starting to set off fireworks and firecrackers down the street when i got home. i think that was why she was freaking out!! so i told them to give her a benadryl (so she'd get sleepy and calm down) and just don't let her out by herself, until this stupid 4th of july stuff gets over with. poor dog! we were running behind schedule, and had planned on getting home sooner, but thankfully we were running late, otherwise, i don't think the outcome would have been so good. they have three small kids, they would have been just devastated to have found her like that, but luckily she's ok and in her bed safe tonight!! :)

Wow, that was a close call. Fireworks can really freak out a lot of dogs. Hope people are real careful this week to try to keep their dogs indoors, and/or watch them carefully when they go out.
