First-person vs. Third-person

Mister Black on My Blog - Sun, July 01 2007

Well, I'm not a cat that's for sure. No matter how much I love that ball of fur, he can't type on a keyboard. What I'm saying is that I find it interesting that so many people type as if they were the animal rather than the owner. Not judging or anything - my motto is live how how want to live. Just wondering if anyone else is amused by that.

Yeah, well I do it for two reasons...

1. Everyone else does it, and I kinda don't want to feel like I'm the only one who doesn't do it.

2. It's kinda fun, talking for your pet.

BTW, Mister Balck, how come you don't answer your messages? That's always the first thing I do!

I'm terrible about answering posts - I apologize.

You know, when I first saw this website. I'll be honest I was like "Oh my gosh, look at these strange people typing as if they are their animals". When I registerd Lita, I was like I'm not going to "type for her". Then I was like "What the heck?" "Why not?" It grows on you, it's fun! I do agree though it is kind of funny. All that "My Mom" or "My Dad" stuff. Like I said though, It's fun! My friends tell me I'm a freak, but I don't care! ^_^

I can fully understand your opinion. Personally, I find it more convienent to talk as myself in regards to serious issue, generally those pertaining to health questios, debates, laws, etc. However, on the occasions when it's conversational, or fun, I find that there is a certain flare to develop and write prose as my cat. It forces me to see the world through my pet's eyes, and that view in itself is interesting to see how everyone else views essentially the same world of pets. Oh well, that's my opinion and I totally respect yours if you wish to speak as a human. Free choice all the way!

I do it cuz it's fun, and my dogs definitely have two different personalities, which I think I "understand". I guess I've been doing it a long time even before this board and these dogs, because I remember when I used to go to the zoo and pretend I knew what the animals were saying. When my ex-roommate and I used to go to the San Antonio zoo, we had a whole comedy routine based around what we thought the animals were saying. Anyway, when someone writes me personally, it's all me. But, when I'm "blogging" as Yogi or Teddy, it's them. It's fun and innocent, even though it might seem a little wacky. Just my opinion.

Mom says we're all different and it's fun to talk as us! She "knows" what we'd say if we could talk. Now, if its a serious debate, mom will talk for herself. Daddy thinks we're all just plain silly!!

All of my critters are exceptional typists! It's their spelling that needs work--they haven't mastered the spell check option yet. ;)

Shion's mom talkin...There's no rule to if you want to talk through your pet or not. I find it fun to talk as if i was my furbaby, its nice to be able to be a character of sorts...besides, i hope that no one is that silly to think the animals are REALLY talking.

I sometimes talk as myself, just depends on the post. I think some of the posts and comments are more fun when spoken through the animals' minds though. One of my favorites is Perl's post on squirrels and homeland security. I crack up every time I read a new comment on there!

you're right Beverly, some of those posts-as-pet are hilarious. When you're a pet owner you know how much that stuff can crack you up!

Third-person! Oh boy! My favorite!

I believe everyone should do what they feel most comfortable with. That's why I post as myself and not my dogs. Sometimes, however, I have a hard time following the "animal-written" posts because I get confused when people start factoring cousins, grandparents etc...
