Am I Going Bald?

Tyranosaurus Riggs on Grooming - Tue, May 08 2007

Does anyone have any suggestions for all this shedding going on? Am I going bald? My mom said she's never had a basset before (that's me!) and does't know what to do besides lots of brushing. I'm getting very self-conscious about my loss of hair! Any tricks or tips for me so I can tell my mom what she should try?

There's a grooming process called "Shed-less". It's a bathing process with a special shampoo along with a special combing process as well. The groomer at Sleepy Hollow Pet Ranch has used it on us in the past and it has done really well! Most grooming shops offer something like this. You might want to check on it!

Riggs, I have the same problem but don't worry you won't go bald (like my Grandpa). My Mom uses shampoo that helps with my shedding and our Doctor told her to give me sensitive skin food to help with my itching and it has helped with my shedding.

A tablespoon of Vegetable Oil a day was recommended by our vet, although I still lose an amazing amount of hair!! But it has helped a little...

Bassets are notorious for shedding. There's a six week window during the year that I DON'T shed...it's usually at the end of the summer between July and September. My mom uses a shedding blade that she got at some store. It's a metal tear-drop shaped loop with a handle on the end. One side of the metal is smooth, the other is grooved/has teeth. I love it when she brushes me but it looks like a dog exploded in the back yard. She vigorously brushes me backwards (against hair growth) to get all the loose hairs and then brushes me the right way to smooth me out. My mom knows to brush me when she pets me and a layer of fur is left behind! We also used to use Shed-Stop. It's an oil that she used to give me with meals. It helped some, but with all the other medical expenses she spends on me, that's gone by the wayside.

A visit to the groomer's every few months will get rid of a decent amount of hair so you'll have less to battle at home!
