My Mom

Barney on My Blog - Wed, June 27 2007

Hi all great canines of the world. as some of you know I adopted my family....I came around and figured how to get in under the fence and they kept me. My mom is sweet, but she has never owned a Beagle before....I know she never knew what she was missing!!! She needs some help figuring out the best way to train me and how to keep me in the fence. I am NOT housebroken and mom would like to work on that so I can come in more. Any suggestions, let her know. Thanks, Barn Boy

We Beagles are very stubborn. We won't do anything that we don't want to do. The trick is, to make us WANT to do actions that you desire. Food is the best way to make that happen. You can't get some inexpensive treats, and get us to do just about anything. When I was a puppy, dad tried to teach me how to walk with a leash. I REFUSED to walk with that thing attached to my neck. He drug me around the block a couple of times. He had to make me want to actually go for a walk. Now when I see the leash, I go crazy because I know that it is time for a walk. Also, make sure that you fix your fence. We are scent orientated hounds, which means that when we catch a scent, any scent, and we will follow it. For some reason when our nose is working overtime, our ears stop working so we can't hear you calling us anymore. We are beautiful and loving dogs, but again we are very stubborn, and want things done our way.

Barney--Mom used treats to get me housebroke. And also puppy pads. It didn't take too long but 2 years later, I still think I need a treat for doing my business. We don't have a fence. When I go out, I'm on a tie out. I've taken off a couple of times. That nose gets me in trouble. Good luck.
