Arggh! My Nails!

Ella on Grooming - Mon, May 07 2007

I HATE getting my nails clipped.

It literally takes a jar of peanut butter and an army of strong armed people to convince me to sit still long enough to get my nails clipped.

Does anyone have any tips on how my parents can make this process a little easier on me?

My Mommy trims my nails right after my bath so they are still soft. She also keeps me and my brother and sister wrapped in the towel. Now we are good for her when she trims our nails.

We use a dremel on our girls it doesnt pinch the quick like the nail clippers do and you can dremel just a little at a time and their nails are smoother too !

Lily will still get out of a towel (or at least hit your lower jaw with her head) and she hates the sound of the filer. It takes two of us, it's horrible, and then she sulks afterward. So I try to get someone else to do it. Her vet can clip them without her even noticing, but I tend to take her to a little dog salon (Petsmart will do it for $6 or $8) and let them do it. Then I just get to take her home, and neither of us are mad at each other. It's not the solution I would prefer, but it works.

It usually takes my dad to distract me and my mom to clip my nails. My dad gets me in the kitchen (not hard, I'm there a lot) and gets me to lay on my back for a belly rub...then my mom comes out with the clippers. It used to work better when the nail sessions weren't as regular as they are now and I was more prone to being suckered into a "free" belly rub without having to beg! Sometimes I break free, but not often. After the nails are done, I usually get a treat. After all, we ARE in the kitchen! Ella, could you be suckered into a belly rub??

Thanks Freckles, belly rubs aren't my thing. My brother Miles loves 'em though.

If I even see the clippers, I run upstairs and hide. And one time the groomer tried the Dremel on me and growled at her.

My mom tricks me into the kitchen where the floor is real slippery, then flips me over on my back and holds me between her legs. I don't struggle all that much cause the floor is too slippery for me to get traction. Come to think of it, I remember my vet saying something about getting me on a slippery surface to make things easier. She always rubs my belly, tells me I'm a good boy and then gives me special treats. It's usually cheese or a hot dog!! mmmm I forget all about the nail clipping after that!

ME TOO! and NOTHING works....the ladies at the groomers may get them done but you better believe they've BOTH got pee on them before I"m done!! :) MOm gets humiliated because she can't do them, not matter how many people have got a hold of me, and I pee when the groomers do it (still with 3 people holding on tight)...well Mom can't type anymore because I just threw up at her feet...

How about a Benadryl?? They make me feel all floopy! Or how about hoisting you up to the washer/dryer? A friend of mine has to be hoisted up there so he won't run away, and it's also high enough that a prudent dog wouldn't jump...dunno. It's a toughie...

Me and Boris won't let mom or dad trim our nails. We freak out, run, hide, bark, yelp...you name it. But for some reason when they take us to PetSmart or Petco we are pretty good. Maybe it's the treat we get afterwards. It's not to expensive and the little price is worth it not to have to struggle.

I vote for the Dremel tool. My groomer uses one, and it really feels good once you get used to it. Since they can grind them down gradually, there is very little chance of getting into the quick with my dark nails. Ooooh, that hurts!
