Dolphin at the zoo

Czar on Grief - Mon, June 25 2007

Phoenix one of our adult female dolphins died yesturday from causes not yet known. I received the phone call from my co-worker saying that she had died. I lost it. It feels like losing a kid. With all of the animals that I have worked around most of them that have died I did not know or work around that much, so it never really affected me before now. Phoenix was just like a big kid, she loved to play just like the other kids. And she loved ice. This tragic event has struck to close to home with all of the marine mammal staff and many of the staff members throughout the rest of the zoo as well. We have already received such an outpouring of support from all over. Sorry for the sad news. You will probably be seeing this on the news sometime tonight.

Awwwww, we are so sorry! I can see how you would get attached to dophins. They are such beautiful, magical animals! Remember the good times with her!

awww, nikki, i am so sorry to hear about this. i know how close you can get to animals you work with. my friend's hubby works there, too, and worked a lot with the penguins, and was just beside himself when that accident happened with them last winter. please accept my deepest condolences. {{{hugs}}} kelly

that would be tough. I can imagine you could get real attached to a dolphin. I swam with them in Acupulco a few years ago and it was the coolest thing I ever did. Fell in love with them in just a few minutes.

Nikki I'm so sorry for your loss. I can empathize with you after working with an animal day after day they become part of your life and family. It will be hard for a time but always remember the good times you had with her.

I volunteer at the Indy Zoo with the Oceans, and I just heard. I am very sad for this tragic incident, and my thoughts and prayers are with all marine mammal staff. Smokie sends purrs, too.

Oh no,

My mommy went to the zoo on Memoiral day weekend. She went with her nieces ages 1 year to 3 years old. They went to the Dolphin show and had watched the dolphin show. Dolphins are my mommy favorite marine animal, she also loves Orca the whales. She is sorry to hear about one of the dolphis passing away. How old was the dolphin?

Barks,
Nico

nico, i think they said (on the news, so don't quote me, LOL) that she was "about" 23 or 24? she came to the zoo in 1988. they said the life expectancy of a dolphin is around that age, but they hadn't known of one to just die suddenly like that. i'm sure nikki can let us know when she finds out. i just hope phoenix did not suffer, poor thing. such a beautiful animal. dolphins are so special.......
