another media attack on pit bull

Czar on My Blog - Tue, June 19 2007

If anyone happened to catch the news coverage on channel 8 this morning on the poor woman who was killed by her chow-mix dog. I had already seen the news story of this horrific incident but I was appauled by the coverage on wish tv this morning, when they first address this story they put a picture of a pit bull up on the screen stating "owner attacked/killed by own dog" In the story they did say that the dog was a chow-mix but why do they have to continue to attack the pit bull breed even when they are not involved. Mommy has thought about starting a petition to send to channel 8 about using pit bull pictures for dog attacks that didnt even involve a pit bull, this isnt fair at all. All I can say is Grrrrr. How frustrating, no wonder people are scared of us, media is attaching pictures of us to ever dog attack and I think they should stop. Any ideas?

I think that you should email Indy Pit Crew and see if they can give you ideas. You are right. They should not be using pictures of dogs not involved.

Indy pit crew is a great idea! I know I would sign a petition like that. There is also contact info on one of my blogs to write the council people about the ban if you are interested in expressing your opinion on that. There are more dangerous things in this world than any of us dogs out there!!

I totally agree with you. I think it's ridiculous you have to pay extra on your home owners insurance if you own a pitbull or a chow. It's dumb people who have created it but the media doesn't help. Last pitbull attack the reporter was walking down the street saying "Pitbulls, a breed who are aggressive by nature" Bull! They're aggressive because people think they're cool looking and buy claw collars for them and tie them to chains. That's such bull. Dogs will treat you the way they are treated. The only thing dogs are by nature are protective. And rightfully so. Nobody knows why that womans dog attacked her. Then again, if someone left me outside all day in 90 degree weather and I had the coat of a chow, I'd be pretty ticked off too! But no, it isn't fair that the media does that to pitbulls. I love seeing "normal" people with pitbulls. When you see them on a nylon collar and a retractable leash. When they have tails and wag their tail when they see you. I found a 3 legged pitbull in Broadripple on the white river about 2 years ago and he was the sweetest dog. We found him a home with a young couple and their many cats. They're a happy family. So aggressive by nature my butt! This dog was trained to fight and lost his leg and he's a big sweety. Eat that channel 8.

They had a story on Channel 13 (I think), and they had a dog behavioralist on there, but of course, before launching into the story, they showed a pit being put into an animal control van. Did you know the dog was a chow/LAB mix? Everyone assumed it was either a chow/pit or a chow/rottie mix, but it was a lab. The behavioralist said when someone asks her if her Newfoundlands bite, she always answers, "All dogs bite." Hmmmmmm. . .

Hi Czar! I didn't see it but I know what you mean, I have ssen this happen before. I am sure this is probably just some "stock" photo they use for this type of story. It is not very responsible though. Being in the media they should understand how impressionable people are and be a little more aware of the perception these items they use with these stories convey to the consumer. Taijah had a good idea. Or maybe just email the station with your thoughts and concerns. Make sure you are nice, eventhough it makes you (and me) want to go GRRR!

I am doing a petition to the mayor if you wanna sign that. It's on my homepage under "1,000 signatures."

My Mom saw the picture too. She thought it was awful that they use pictures like that. It was a bad story but why must Pits be drug into every dog attack story. It's only adding to the misconceptions in the public about Pits. Shame on Channel 8.

you just noticed the bad "b-roll" as they call it on TV because you are aware of the breed differences. it's shocking how much mismatched stuff will get put on the news just because they need a moving image in the background.
